ST. George's dominate Roper Cup fiesta
ST George's College (STGC) defeated Kingston College (KC) 1-0 in the feature encounter of the present-day boys to capture the Roper Cup 3-1 on aggregate yesterday at Emmet Park.
St George's, the current Manning Cup and all-island Olivier Shield champions, won the game courtesy of a Davian Kelly penalty just after the restart for a comfortable 1-0 win.
Earlier, STGC's Under-35 defeated their KC counterparts 2-1 and with the Roper Cup to be decided by the aggregate scores of the present-day boys, the task was never an easy one.
STGC also captured the George Thompson trophy 3-1 on aggregate after defeating KC 2-0 in the Under-14 and playing to a 1-1 draw in the Under-16.
The Pancho Rankine Cup for the Over-35s was shared after both schools battled to a 0-0 draw.
As usual, the North Street football fiesta pulled in a large crowd, but the standard of play between the prospective Manning Cup teams was nothing to write home about.
The STGC team was without Marvin Morgan, but had national senior team players Oneil Fisher and Devon Williams, Carl Reid and Davian Kelly who are expected to create havoc for most schoolboy teams this season.
KC probably had an authentic excuse in that at least five players were absent due to national duties. The backups did well but failed to break down the well-marshalled St George's backline.
