HAVING won group honours over Wolmer's, St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) are now looking to take their game to the next level by continuing to excel in the Manning Cup and go all the way and claim their first lien on the Walker Cup KO title.
STATHS edged Wolmer's 1-0 on Tuesday in their Group D ISSA/Pepsi/ Digicel Manning Cup top-of-the-table clash at the Wolmer's playing field, to top the group on 22 points and secure their Walker Cup KO play-off spot.
"We plan to approach the Walker Cup and the second round just as how we have approached every game, step by step," said Keith Nichol, STATHS's coach. "In the second round we will have to step up the pace as the teams will be a little more difficult to penetrate, so we will assess the teams we are going to play and prepare tactically."
He added: "The Walker Cup is very important to us as we have never won it. We plan on moving on to the second round in the Walker Cup and to the final. The quality players we have, and with the level of football they are playing, I think they deserve to carry home the two trophies. They are a cut above their age group."
Jermaine Reid came up with the game's lone goal in the 83rd minute, a result which ensured that STATHS finished four ahead of Wolmer's. However, the latter have also qualified for the second round of the Manning Cup.
"This result has put us out of the Walker Cup and I was looking forward to getting to it but, unfortunately, it didn't happen, so I now just have to turn my attention to the second round of the Manning Cup," said Michael Francis, Wolmer's coach.
"We have to just go back to the sessions and look at where we went wrong and just take it from there," he added.

Also on Tuesday, Jamaica College blanked Pembroke Hall 6-0 to move to 27 points and top Group A ahead of Waterford, who finished with 25 points. Both teams have advanced to both the second round of the Manning Cup and the Walker Cup KO, with Waterford qualifying as one of the best second-place teams.
Kingston College secured a 0-0 draw with Innswood in Group B to move to 23 points and join group winners Norman Manley (27 points) in the second round. Norman Manley, despite losing 0-2 to St Jago, remain top of the group and progressed to the Walker Cup KO.
Calabar High went down 0-2 to Spanish Town in Group C to remain on 25 points and will have to be content with playing in the Manning Cup's second round. Excelsior amassed 32 points to top the group and secure their second-round and Walker Cup spot.
Bridgeport and Tivoli, who were not in action on Tuesday, also qualified for the Manning Cup second round on 23 and 20 points, respectively, with Bridgeport also securing their place in the Walker Cup.
Also on Tuesday, St George's College defeated Kingston Technical 6-0 to top Group F ahead of Eltham, who blanked St Mary's College 5-0. St George's finished on 26 points, one ahead of Eltham. Both will, however, advance to the Manning Cup second round, as well as the Walker Cup, with Eltham being the other top second-place team.
