MONTEGO BAY, St James - For the second straight year Lennon High eliminated high-flying Spalding in the first round of the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel Ben Francis Knock-out via a 3-0 margin.
Ewan Grandison scored twice and Justin Johnson once as the daCosta Cup Zone H winners cruised past the Zone G winners in their first-round game played at the Jamalco Sports Club in Clarendon yesterday.
Spalding had lost by the same margin to the same opponents at the same venue at this stage of the competition last year, but went on to make the final of the daCosta Cup.
Spalding breezed through Zone G of the daCosta Cup to book their place in the Knock-out competition, but lost their final zone game 1-2 to Christiana last Saturday.
Meanwhile, first-time entrants Paul Bogle High, former champions Rusea's and Manchester High joined Lennon as winners yesterday and have advanced to Saturday's quarter-finals.
At York Oval, Paul Bogle had a successful entry into the competition after beating Annotto Bay High 2-0.
Rafe Green and Jahnel Lee scored for the Zone L champions as they handed Annotto Bay their first defeat of the season.
At Jarrett Park, it took a goal in the second period of extra time from Brian Brown to give Rusea's a 1-0 win over Marcus Garvey Technical.
Marcus Garvey finished the game with nine men after Latroy Laing and Jonathon Douglas were sent off for second yellow cards.
Laing was ejected in the 89th minute, while Douglas got his marching orders in the 115th.
The teams battled to a goalless draw in the regulation 90 minutes before Rusea's finally found a way through the Marcus Garvey defence, when Brown's free-kick from the right side of the 18 yards box ended in the far corner of the goal.
At Frome, Manchester blanked Mannings School 2-0 to book their place in the top eight.
Yesterday's Results
Paul Bogle 2 Annotto Bay 0; Lennon 3 Spalding 0; Mannings 0 Manchester 2; Rusea's 1 Marcus Garvey 0.
