    RE: Frome

their is nothing wrong with standards but when certain standards are not met especially in ja i think the school should help the student. Jamaica has a limited pool soan throwing away some is making it worse.

Just like in the ncaa oncertain daysbasketball players have study time, they are helped an given privilages so the strain off work is less than the normal student. School work should come first, but their is nothing worng in giving a helping hand.

A footballer should not be thrown away because of grades, the school should have a plan to help the athletes.

Trust me you do not want to talk about the ncaa with me, that system isso curupt.

No one disagrees regarding helping students, whether or not they play football. Of course, having a football schedule is a lot of work, so some might need special attention. But at no time should we be excusing failure just because they are footballers.

Yes, the NCAA is corrupt, hence Dexter Manley. We don't need to follow that example.

From the way he spells and expresses himself Lawless must be an outstanding athletic talent.

That is why we have an Under 21 club competition and other youth competition, it is because Jamaica is a small poor Third World country why we cant afford to watse class space on athletes who dont want to learn.

If you check the Under 20 team that leaves the island today you will see one boy from a school called Quality Academy, I am sure that school does not have a football team, at least not one that plays in the Manning Cup but he was seen by some one and is on a national team now.

I know for a fact that schools in Kingston like Wolmers etc have extra tutoring for the boys they buy to run track, KC does it and so does Calabar.

Well I am thinking it is not just Dexter Manley alone who also went to Nebraska and benefitted form a very loose system but at leats the NCAA has done a lot in the last 20 years or so to make the system better.

But there will always be the case like Maurice Clarette who will always get through due to unscrupulous 'boosters' who are seeing millions coming back to them down the road.

Quality is a private school, it is called teh reject school and wins teh private league. I actually saw them play last year and they did look good. Yes they play crarppy teams so they are a bunch of individuals, not a team.

I am positive if you started a program that helped athletes who lets face it are not the smartest book wise, by the time they reach 4th form an up there would be more capable youngsters. mY idea of helping is not extra lession really but to have do what they like, it could be sports, cars, building whatever it is, just show them that school isnt a drag.

Too me the problem is the jamaican school schedule, which i personally feel is too narrow minded and puts too much emphasis on certain areas. I feel if jamaica had different types of classes not just the normalboring schedule. Too many kids are left behind while only few succeed.

You have external exams which too me favour a minority of students, if the goverment is ever going to reform the school system we should look at certain aspects of the US system.

Lawless, your point about having students do what they like is a good one. While I was at STETHS, students had two tracks in which they would pursue. One was academic and the other vocational. The academic track allowed you to do subjects like your maths, physics, chemistry, economics, english etc. The vocational track included some maths and english, but placed emphasis on areas like auto-mechanics, electrical installation, metal work, drafting etc.

You are right about the Jamaican system of education does not cater to the entire spectrum of students in the student population. The tendency is a one-size-fits-all. The emphasis is only on academics and it gives the impression that the other people do not matter.

Many of our students who went the vocational track did their exams and found employment in various industries, from Alpart, Alcan Kirkvine,JPS, the sugar industry etc. If we chose to force our students do do things they do not have the ability for or do not like, then we will schools continue to turn our misfits. Not every student is fit for a purely academic track.
