Former winners advance in daCosta Cup

MONTEGO BAY - Six more schools, led by former winners Rusea's High, Munro College and St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS), advanced to the Inter-Zone round of the daCosta Cup after yesterday's round of matches.

All but three places have now been taken, with the others expected to be filled by next Wednesday when Zone L should be completed, along with a rescheduled Zone J game between McGrath and Dinthill that will decide the second qualifier from that group.

Petersfield beat a slumping Grange Hill 1-0 thanks to a Corey Rodriques goal to win Zone C and oust defending champions Godfrey Stewart, who beat Maude McLeod 7-0.

Petersfield topped the Zone with 17 points - one more than Grange Hill, who lost their last two matches after needing only a point to top the group and clinch a Ben Francis KO spot.

Seven-time champions Rusea's returned to the Inter-Zone for the first time in three years after edging Knockalva 1-0 through a second-half goal from substitute Horace Maxwell.

Munro topped a competitive Zone E after beating Newell 4-1, with national invitee Richard Wilson notching a hat-trick to take his season's tally to 13 goals.

Munro finished with 24 points - one more than STETHS, who edged Black River on goal difference after both ended on 23 points. STETHS had a +36 average after beating Lacovia 2-0, while Black River had +15 following their 3-1 win over Maggotty.

Tacky won a first Ben Francis KO spot after topping Zone K with a 2-1 win over Brimmervale, who were eliminated. Oracabessa, who edged Islington 1-0, took the other qualifying berth.

McGrath High stayed alive for the second spot from Zone J after edging the already-qualified Charlemont 1-0. McGrath must beat Dinthill by seven clear goals in their rescheduled match on Tuesday to advance ahead of Bog Walk, who drew 2-2 with Ewarton.

Sanjay Wilson scored for DeCarteret College in their 1-0 win over Manchester High to top Zone F with 16 points. They will meet Frome in the first round of the Ben Francis KO on Wednesday.

Ocho Rios High rounded off their Zone D fixtures with a 16-0 spanking of Aabuthnott Gallimore at Drax Hall, with Grevon Harris, Devroe Moncrieff and Zico Lewis scoring hat-tricks. Mickhail Burford scored a double.

Ocho Rios are the only team with a perfect win record, which will be tested on Wednesday when they face Petersfield in the first round of the Ben Francis KO.
