Glenmuir, CC, Decarteret advance to Inter-Zone

MONTEGO BAY - Five more teams advanced to the Inter-Zone round of the rural area daCosta Cup schoolboy competition on Saturday, while a number of teams lost for the first time.
Former champions Glenmuir High are through, despite a second draw against Garvey Maceo, while former winners Clarendon College secured a place in the Ben Francis KO after topping Zone H.
William Knibb from Zone A, Ocho Rios from Zone C, DeCarteret College from Zone F and Holmwood from Zone G also booked their tickets into the next round with two weeks left in the preliminary round.
Eight teams have now advanced, including early qualifiers Frome Technical, Clarendon and Spalding. Sixteen more places are up for grabs.
Inter-zone qualifiers Frome Tech and Spalding High, along with Grange Hill and St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS), lost for the first time this season.
Glenmuir played to a 1-1 draw with Garvey Maceo at home in May Pen and are on 20 points. Garvey Maceo are the only team that can exceed Glenmuir's tally, but are in a three-way tussle with Kemps Hill and Central for the other place.
The Cassman Williams-coached William Knibb won a fifth straight game, beating St James High 2-1 at Jarrett Park to clinch their place from Zone A.
Cordell Simpson scored his sixth goal and Lance Laing his third from the penalty spot as William Knibb raced to 16 points with a game in hand and need only a point to secure a place in the Ben Francis KO.
The Zone A winners are one of four teams to have drawn byes to the quarter-finals of the KO competition.
Herbert Morrison strengthened their position with a 1-0 win over Cornwall College, who are in danger of elimination for the first time in 20 years.
Herbert Morrison moved to 11 points - four more than Cornwall, who now must win their remaining two games and hope Herbert Morrison fail to win their next.
DeCarteret also booked their second straight Inter-Zone berth with a 3-1 win over May Day in Zone F, while Manchester High stayed in contention with a 3-0 win over Belair.
Holmwood avenged their only loss of the season to hand Spalding their only defeat so far, to secure their place after missing out last year.
Munro College's 1-0 upset of Zone E leaders STETHS left the group wide open with a point separating the top three schools. Black River join STETHS on 19 points in the lead, with Munro a point behind.
