CC, Garvey clash in Ben Francis KO quarters

MAY PEN, Clarendon — Clarendon College and Garvey Maceo, two of the hottest teams in the ISSA Pepsi/ Digicel daCosta Cup rural area schoolboy football competition, will clash at Brancourt in the feature game in today’s quarter-final round of the Ben Francis Knockout.
Four games will be played today with places in Wednesday’s semi-finals on the line.
Cornwall College, fresh from Thursday’s 4-0 win over Cedric Titus, will return to Jarrett Park where they will face a dangerous Grange Hill team, Fair Prospect will take on Dinthill at Cader Park, while Rusea's High and Manchester High meet at the STETHS Sports Complex.
All games start at 3:00 pm.
The game at Brancourt is shaping up to be an explosive one between two team that have combined to score 100 goals, while allowing a mere 11.
Garvey Maceo advanced to the quarter-finals after a narrow penalty kick win over Spalding on Wednesday, while Clarendon College drew a bye after advancing to the final last year.
The Jeffrey Hewitt-coached Garvey Maceo will be hoping to prove their win and draw over daCosta Cup champions Glenmuir were no flukes as they take on a Clarendon team that has shown championship form this season.
Ashton Bennett who scored nearly 30 goals last season, is in good scoring form again this year and has scored 21 goals, including one against Spalding on Wednesday.
Clarendon have their goalscoring machine as well in the form of Damali Samuels who has accounted for 25 of Clarendon’s 46 goals, while Andel Callman and Richard Bennett will also feature in the attack. Rusea’s High, Zone B winners, will take on a confident Manchester High team that scored in time added-on on their way to upsetting Munro College in Santa Cruz, also in midweek.
Rusea’s are among the more prolific scoring teams in the competition this season with 35 goals led by Damaine Thompson, Andre Atkinson and Roydel Moncrieff.
Seven-time winners Cornwall College, having shaken off the controversy of having points docked for using an ineligible player in one game, was in superior form against an outclassed Cedric Titus team, scoring four goals in the first half before going into cruise control in the second half on Wednesday.
Grange Hill won a competitive Zone C and will be a tougher opponent today.
The experienced Rian Gayle and Ronaldo Joehill will lead the Grange Hill attack against a Cornwall defence that has allowed one goal in their last four matches.
The Grange Hill defence will have to deal with a confident Cornwall attack led by Radcliff Hall’s 12 goals.
Fair Prospect have been idle for a full week after spanking St Thomas Technical in the final of the Zone L playoff and will have ‘home advantage’ over Dinthill Technical at Cader Park.
Dinthill are however coming off a 2-0 win over another eastern school, Brimmervale on Wednesday and will be seeking their first Ben Francis semifinal berth.
