APPLETON, St Elizabeth - St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) advanced to the Inter-Zone round of the ISSA Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup rural area schoolboys' football competition after beating Maggotty 2-0 in their return round Zone E game played at Appleton yesterday.
Derval Green scored twice for the Kurt Brooks-coached team to join zone winners Munro College as the qualifiers from Zone E. They join another nine schools in the second round.
STETHS improved their points tally to 15, 10 behind Munro, who were 2-0 winners over Black River, a team which had held them to a 1-1 draw in the first round, their only blemish so far this season.
Additionally, after Frome Technical High were awarded points from their unplayed Zone B game against Knockalva, they have virtually advanced, along with Rusea's High. Both are on 21 points with two games in hand and both would have to lose those games by large margins and Merlene Ottey would have to win their four remaining games by large margins to advance ahead of any of the two.
Spalding High were also awarded the points from two unplayed Zone G games against Knox College and Albert Town to finish with a perfect win record of eight from eight starts.
Clarendon College's perfect run in Zone H was stopped after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Vere Technical at Brancourt, the first time in nine games this season the high octane offence was failing to score.
Clarendon College's 33 goals scored lead the competition.
Meanwhile, defending champions Glenmuir High dealt Old Harbour's chances of advancing from Zone I a big blow after a 4-0 win in their return round game.
The win helped second placed Glenmuir (17 points), to create some cushion against the losers who are now five points adrift in third place.
Garvey Maceo lead with 20 points, but have played one game more
than Glenmuir.
At Jarrett Park, 10-man Cornwall College beat nine-man Anchovy High 3-1 to stay clear at the top in Zone A and move to within a point of sewing up their place in the next round.
Kimoy Allen and Roshane Reid of Anchovy were sent off, while Cornwall's Mikhail Weatherly, who started as captain in place of Edward Campbell, was also sent off, all in the space of about 10 minutes.
Radcliff Hall scored a double to take his tally to 10 on the season and Jason King scored his first in this his third season as Cornwall struggled to earn three points in a game that lacked intensity.
Hall put Cornwall ahead after 19 minutes, scoring from less than a foot out when the Anchovy goalkeeper Omar Gordon failed to secure the ball.
Clevaughn Jarrett equalised from the penalty spot in the 35th minute for Anchovy as Cornwall were forced to wait until late to get the maximum points. Hall headed them into the lead in the 80th minute, while King added the third three minutes later.
Annotto Bay and Brimmervale stayed in the lead in Zone K with wins over Islington and Oracabessa, respectively, both moving to 27 points, two more than St Mary Technical, the only other team that can advance to the next round.
Brimmervale ended Oracabessa's chances of advancing with a 2-1 win, while Annotto Bay Blanked Islington 3-0.
