'Charlie' in charge - Schoolboy football hit hard by rain

The 2007 Inter-Secondary Schools Association (ISSA)/Pepsi/Digicel Manning Cup was hit hard by persistent rainfall in Kingston, St. Andrew and St. Catherine yesterday.
Only one of six scheduled matches was played on a soggy field at the Tony Spaulding Sports Complex. In that match hosts Charlie Smith blanked Ascot High 3-0.
Waterford vs Jamaica College, St. Jago versus Innswood and Tivoli versus St. Mary's College in Group A and Denham Town versus Camperdown and Greater Portmore versus Pembroke Hall were all postponed.
Led by a brace from Earl Palmer, Charlie Smith registered their fourth win in six games to rocket to the top of Group E with 14 points, three more than second place Camperdown. Greater Portmore are next on eight points and Ascot six.
Jerome Waite, coach of Charlie Smith, was pleased with his team's effort in trying conditions.
"The condition was a bit heavy today, but I think the team played fairly well. Ascot did not have much to offer but it is good to see another of our players scoring two goals," said Waite.
"We have a pretty young team, the average age is about 16 years and nine months. We are hoping that we can make it to the second round because this is something that we are looking forward to based on the young batch that we have this year," Waite added.
"We didn't show much any character in today's game. We just sat back and let Charlie Smith dominate the game and this saw us giving up three simple goals," Everald Campbell, coach of Ascot said. "Our main aim now to see if we can get nine points from our next three games and hope that we can qualify for the second round of the competition."
Dominated game
Charlie Smith dominated the game from the opening whistle and were rewarded in the 21st minute when Palmer fired home a 20-yard free kick past goalkeeper Ricardo Boucher.
Kemar Douglas made it 2-0 for Charlie Smith in the 34th minute when he picked-up a pass in midfield, then out sprinted three Ascot defenders before firing home a powerful right-footed shot past the advancing Boucher.
Charlie Smith led 2-0 at the half-time period.
Palmer got his second nine minutes into the final half with a powerful shot which went like a rocket past Boucher.
Adrian McGow got Ascot's best chance in the dying moments of the game, but his point-blank effort was spectacularly saved by goalkeeper Dervon Brown.
Today's matches
Group B: Jose Marti vs Donald Quarrie and Eltham vs Kingston High.
Group C: Kingston Technical vs St. Catherine, Campion College vs Calabar and Wolmer's vs Meadowbrook.
Group D: Dunoon vs Norman Manley and St. George's College vs Penwood.
Group F: Cumberland vs Excelsior, Trench Town vs St. Andrew Technical and Jonathan Grant vs Vauxhall.
