Costa Rica & USA open CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship with victories

13.9.06 - The USA and the host Costa Rica opened the 2006 CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship (FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2006 – Qualifier Costa Rica) with victories over Canada and Jamaica, respectively, at Punta Leona in Puntarenas on Wednesday.

A spirited crowd of 950 spectators saw Zak Ibsen, Yuri Morales and Brendon Taguinod all scored for the USA (1-0, 3 Points) in the 3:0 win over Canada (0-1, 0 Points) in the first encounter of the inaugural CONCACAF tournament.

“To win this game (vs. Canada) today was very important,” said USA’s Beach Soccer Technical Director Roberto Ceciliano. “Now this doesn’t mean we are the favorites in the tournament because all the teams equally strong and this round-robin event will be very close call.”

In the second match on Wednesday, three goals by Danny Jhonson led Costa Rica (1-0, 3 Points) to a hard-fought 8:6 triumph over Jamaica (0-1, 0 Points).

“I believe it was a good game from the start,” said Costa Rica’s Technical Director Edson Soto. “The concentration was a key factor for us winning this match, because as we were leading by two goals in the second period, we began to celebrate as if we won the match and resulted in us trailing at one point. In the end we were able to turn the match around in our favor and held on for the victory.”

The 2006 CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship continues on Thursday in Puntarenas when the USA meets Jamaica at 10:00 and then Mexico (0-0, 0 Points) faces Canada at 11:00. COMPLETE SCHEDULE

The matches from 15-17 September will be televised live in Costa Rica by Teletica’s Channel 33.

The champion and runner-up from the final round standings will progress to the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2006. At the conclusion of the CONCACAF event on 17 September, a draw will be conducted by CONCACAF to determine which groups the qualifiers will be placed into for the FIFA tournament.

The 16-team FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup this year is the second tournament to be held; the inaugural event took place in May 2005 at the Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro.
