MONTEGO BAY, St James - President of the St James Football Association, Lennox Wallace, has described government's failure to complete work on the Montego Bay mini-stadium at Catherine Hall as shameful and disappointing.
Wallace, who was addressing Thursday evening's awards ceremony of the St James/Sandals Division One league at the Frank Warren Chapel, expressed "extreme disappointment and disgust that the facility has not been improved in the last three or four years".
Wallace said it was a shame that "in 2006 we are still waiting on the government to commence Phase Three of the construction".
Work on the complex has stopped for a number of years following the completion of just two phases, including a world-class football field, a 400m Mondo running track and perimeter fencing.
It is understood that upon completion, the facility will have seating for about 10,000 patrons, changing rooms for teams and officials and bathroom facilities, as well as parking areas.
Wallace called on the government to give Montego Bay and western Jamaica more of a priority.
"For far too long now the government has pushed sports development in Montego Bay and western Jamaica on the back burner and we are more than fed up. Montego Bay is an important part of Jamaica and we deserve more than the crumbs and promises we are being served," he said.
The St James FA president said he has noted the recent signing of a loan agreement with the Venezuelan government of over US$9m and hopes work will actually start soon.
As a result of the delay in the start of work on Phase Three of the construction, Montego Bay's two National Premier League clubs Seba United and Wadadah will be forced to play home games away come January.
Jarrett Park, where they play their home games, will be closed for repairs and will host practice sessions for four countries taking part in the ICC Cricket World Cup next year.
Wallace praised sponsors Sandals for their continued support of the parish's football programme and sought to assure them that their contribution was being put to good use.
"In a time of increasing demand on the sponsorship dollar, that Sandals... continues to support the youths of the parish is a big endorsement for our efforts."

Solidarity is not a matter of well wishing, but is sharing the very same fate whether in victory or in death.
