  • Mikel Fails In Red-card Appeal

Chelsea midfielder Mikel John Obi's appeal against his sending-off against Manchester United has been rejected by the Football Association.
Mikel was shown a straight red card by referee Mike Dean after a challenge on United left-back Patrice Evra during Chelsea's 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford.
Chelsea immediately lodged an appeal against the decision but an FA commission on Tuesday rejected their claim and Mikel will have to serve a three-match ban for serious foul play.
The FA said in a statement: "At a regulatory commission hearing, a claim for wrongful dismissal from Chelsea's Mikel John Obi was rejected.
"Mikel was shown a red card for serious foul play during the match at Old Trafford on 23 September.
"As a result, Mikel will serve a three-match suspension with immediate effect."
Chelsea's case was not helped by the fact FIFA do not permit the downgrading of cards from red to yellow.
To have succeeded in their appeal the club would have had to prove that there should not have been any form of sanction taken against the player, and that in effect there had been a clear error by the referee.
Chelsea manager Avram Grant said after the match: "It was the wrong decision and it changed the game."

That was a 50/50 tackle lazie.

The decision stsnds because the EPL must give the refs decision a high degree of confidence. The decision to rule against the ref--the foul must be overt and down right blatant.

Again, any 50/50 call will almost always rule in favor of the bloody ref.

Mikel should have received a yellow.

50/50 yes! Look at how each player went in. Obi went in to kotch the player. Dangerous play therefore red card.

Sigh. Pity I didn't see it. You know I have the definitive say on what happened and the punishment it deserved.

              Wrong - card!
Right - in committee room/committee's position! Not a chance in hell any sensible review committee could overturn that decision.

It is all about - "in the opinion of the referee"...in this case terrible "opinion of the ref" ...but, it is "in the opinion of the ref"! Case closed!

Is Obi a dirty player? Come now people. Review the laws of the game and stop the speculations.

You for one cannot be taken serious as you claimed Chelsea should have received a penalty and the only Chelsea player to be fouled in the box was A CHELSEA DEFENDER ... IN HIS OWN BOX. Gwaan fishing Karl.
