No. 4 Men's Soccer Remains Undefeated With OT Win Over Georgetown

STORRS, Conn. (Sept. 15, 2007) - Junior Akeem Priestley (Kingston, Jamaica) scored the game-winning goal in the 97th minute as the fourth-ranked University of Connecticut men's soccer team defeated Georgetown, 1-0, Saturday night at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in front of 3,275 fans. With the win, the Huskies improve to 6-0 on the year and 1-0 in the BIG EAST, while the Hoyas fall to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
UConn is now 8-1-2 in conference openers under head coach Ray Reid, the last two of which have come on overtime wins.
The Huskies came out firing from the get-go, putting up a 7-1 shot advantage in the first period (16-1 overall). O'Brian White (Scarborough, Ontario) had two close calls for UConn, the first coming in the 17th minute when he faced an open net from the right side of the goal box, only to have his shot blocked by a Hoya defender. The second would come with four minutes remaining in the half when he received a pass from Chukwudi Chijindu (Fontana, Calif.) in the right corner, but sent the shot just high.
The second period proved to be much of the same as the Huskies created a plethora of scoring opportunities, but were unable to capitalize on them. White took four shots in the second half, placing two on goal for saves by Georgetown's keeper, Joe Devine. Devine finished the night with five saves against UConn's potent attack that started the week ranked fourth in the nation.
Devine kept the Hoyas in the game through the 90 minutes of regulation, but there was nothing that could contain UConn once it entered bonus time. Priestley received the ball along the left sideline late in the 97 minute from Ryan Cordeiro (Highland Mills, N.Y.) via Greg King (Queensland, Australia). With a wide open lane in front of him, Priestley kicked back and launched a rocket from 20-plus yards out that landed squarely in the upper right 90 to give UConn the 1-0 win.
This is Priestley's second game-winning goal of the season. He also gave the Huskies the 1-0 win over Florida International in the UConn/adidas Classic when he scored at the nine-second mark. The Huskies head out on the road for the first time this season, traveling to No. 24 South Florida and DePaul for a pair of BIG EAST contests. Both the Bulls and Blue Demons are among the still-undefeated teams in the country, ensuring an exciting match for the Huskies.
