    Burrell to run unopposed

Former Jamaica Football Federation president, Captain Horace Burrell.

The Jamaica Football Federation (J.F.F.) have now confirmed the fact that former boss, Captain Horace Burrell, will run unopposed for the position of president at its November 4th voting congress in Hanover.

Recent speculation had tipped Burrell to be the sole candidate for the post, following the surprising announcement of incumbent, Crenston Boxhill, not to contest the election and the decision of the Kingston and St. Andrew Football Association (K.S.A.F.A.) to remain neutral in the affair by not submitting a candidate for that position.

Cayman FA boss lauds Clarendon awardees

Cayman FA boss lauds Clarendon awardees

"Fail to prepare or prepare to fail", were the words uttered by Jeffrey Webb, president of the Cayman Islands Football Association in his keynote address at the Clarendon FA's 33rd Awards Ceremony held at the Versalles Hotel in May Pen last Thursday.

Webb is an executive officer of the Fidelity Bank, head of the Business Development for Fidelity Group of Companies, CEO of Webb Investments and Consulting, president and CEO of LaFarge Developments and business partner of Captain Horace Burrell.

He presently serves as vice-chairman of the FIFA International Audit Committee on CONCACAF Finance and Youth Committee, and is also chairman of the CFU Finance Committee.

In its 103rd-year history, Webb is the first black man to ever speak on FIFA's finances in Morocco back in May 2005.

The Caymanian, who had obviously done his homework on the parish, praised the youth programme - headed by coach John Green - for its outstanding achievements in securing four players on the National Under-20 squad which won silver at the recent Pan Am Games held in Brazil.

Webb said it was obvious that FA boss Michael Ricketts had built on the legacy inherited in this dynamic association and was responsible for many improvements during his three-year reign.

" I applaud your very significant achievements in getting a team into the National Premier League - Sporting Central - for securing increased and new corporate sponsorship for your various competitions.

"In addition, you have established a very worthwhile exchange programme to ensure that your referees gain international exposure," Webb stated.

He made special mention of Clarendonian Horace Burrell - one of Jamaica's most successful football administrators and senior vice-president of CFU; executive member of CONCACAF and FIFA ambassador for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

"Burrell," Webb joked, "could not kick a ball straight but was able, under his administration, to successfully guide the Reggae Boyz to the 1998 World Cup Finals in France."

He was also on target in listing the names of outstanding players from the parish who had made their mark while donning the national colours.
Players like the legendary Allan "Skill" Cole - who was voted by FIFA as the best player to have come out of the Caribbean - Winston "Fanna" Griffiths, Ray Graham, Anthony Corbett, Omar Daley, Allien Whittaker and Orville Edwards.

Meanwhile, Captain's Bakery Major League awards went to Rickert Graham for Most Valuable Player; Jamie Fothergil for leading goal-scorer; winning coach Maurice McCalla; Most Disciplined Team to New Longsville; midseason award to Gayle FC; the Major League championship prize to Morgan's Pass; runners-up award to Gayle FC; third-place prize to Wood Hall and fourth to Newlongsville.

In the Super Plus Division One competition, Monymusk captured the top prize with Paisley second Ebony Stars third and Sanguinnetti fourth.
The leading goal-scorer was Ryan Bennett and Most Valuable Player Christopher Powell. Sporting Central took the Trevor Dunkley Ko crown while Humble Lion were runners-up.

Taxi Association won the Epic Industries Ltd Business House award ahead of Fire Station, while the top referee was Kevin Morrison and top assistant, Lloyd Reader.

All the media houses were awarded outstanding coverage throughout the season, while the sponsors were honoured for their continued contributions to the sport in the parish.

            Not new!
The referees association developed a relationship with the Cayman FA and its referees' association that goes back to the days of late President of the Cayman FA, Bush.

Bush was a business man, radio announcer (DJ, I think)...and visited with us...yes, gamma - us...and, we had a number of exchanges and ran referees seminars for them.

OJ: That is the way football is run across the world - local & international - one big sociogram!

Boxhill did not decide not to run...it was decided for him by the delegates.

My understanding was, there just was no parish associations left to effect nomination. He needed at least 3 such parish associations and the Good Captain had only left 2 not in his bag!

                Right?
