U-23s to start 12-day training camp on Monday
Jamaica's 27-man Under-23 Olympic squad will start a 12-day training camp on Monday in preparation for their first-round Olympic qualifying tournament in Aruba from September 9-13, a JFF release said yesterday.

The group should have started the camp on Tuesday, but it had to be pushed back as a result of conditions associated with Hurricane Dean's aftermath which are affecting some players.

'We had to push back the camp because many of the players were still having personal problems related to the hurricane,' national youth football coach Wendell Downswell said yesterday.

U-23s to focus on key areas
BY ANDREW HANCEL Observer staff reporter hancela@jamaicaobserver.com
          Tuesday, August 28, 2007

The National Under-23 squad has begun preparation for the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) qualification round to the 2008 Olympic Games, and coach Wendell Downswell has targeted key areas to get his charges ready in the little time available.

"The emphasis here, will be placed on technical and tactical awareness, and the strategic parts of the game," Downswell told reporters during the team's first training session at the National Stadium's east field yesterday.
The Jamaicans are set to contest the Caribbean round of the qualifiers from September 9-13 in Aruba and are slated to leave the country two days prior to the start of the tournament.

The young Reggae Boyz were originally scheduled to start preparing earlier, but the passage of Hurricane Dean delayed such plans, leaving the coaching staff playing 'catch-up'.

But despite the challenges that the category four storm has created, Downswell believes the crop of 25 players are mindful of what they'll be up against.

"The players are all cognizant of that. and you can see, based on the sort of attitude that they have been displaying thus far, it is quite positive. And our intention is to keep it along that trend and keep improving," Downswell said.

However, a lot of technical drills dominated yesterday's session, a vital component to develop heading into any tournament. Also, only 18 players were present, with a few said to be overseas on tour with their clubs and some on their way from their rural homes.

National head coach, Velibor 'Bora' Milutinovic, who is expected to play a key role in the Under-23's development, was on hand, observing the proceedings.

Placed in Group B, the Jamaicans are drawn alongside Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados and the host country with only the winner progressing to the second round.

Meanwhile, Downswell said he is aiming to have two practice matches, hopefully against National Premier League (NPL) champions, Harbour View FC, and runners-up, Portmore United, before the team leaves.

"The staff and the players are cognizant of the fact that we have started late. Therefore, we will be making the extra effort. We know how important this is to the programme, especially leading up to 2010 (World Cup)," stated Downswell.

And the final 18-man squad, which will include a blend of Under-20 players, is likely to be announced by September 5, Downswell said.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
