Colin Todd wants City's wingers to be proper wide boys at Swansea on Saturday.
Lee Holmes and Jermaine Johnson have been key players in the team's more attacking approach this season.
But Todd feels the pair could be even more dangerous by having a bigger go at the full backs. Both have a tendency to cut inside and he would like to see them prepared to take the outside route more often.
"I've told them we have to raid down the flanks for longer periods rather than coming inside," he said. "When we've been doing that we've caused the opposition a lot of problems. It puts the full backs on the back foot and is more difficult to defend against.<DIV id=midpagempu style="DISPLAY: none" align=center></DIV>"You cannot look to go wide for the whole 90 minutes but in the first 20-25 you've got to look to stretch your opponents. You've got to vary it.
"It should be one of their strengths because both our wingers have got pace - and I don't think we've seen JJ at his quickest yet either."
City were back in training after being given two days off following a very physical session on Monday. And Todd is confident they can bounce straight back from their first league loss since the opening day of the season.
"We need to improve on little aspects of our game because everybody there at Brentford knew we should have come away with something," he said.
"Drawing with Rotherham was a kick up the backside and last week was another little jolt. But I believe there's enough in the side to keep moving forward."
Meanwhile, Ben Muirhead could soon be putting pressure on the other wingers as he recovers from a hernia operation.
Todd said: "Ben is making good progress and might be back in two weeks."
