<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=5 width=170 align=left border=0><TBODY><TR><TD></TD></TR><TR><TD><SPAN class=Description>PRENDERGAST... first ref from region selected to officiate in two senior World Cup Finals</SPAN></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><P class=StoryText align=justify>HAVANA, Cuba (CMC) - Caribbean football sponsors Digicel have paid tribute to Jamaican FIFA referee Peter Prendergast, who is retiring from the international scene.<P class=StoryText align=justify>Prendergast, 43, blew his final whistle in an international football game in the Digicel Caribbean Cup Group A game between Cuba and The Bahamas at the Pedro Marrero Stadium on Monday evening.<P class=StoryText align=justify>Ben Atherton, Marketing Director for Digicel Group, declared that Prendegast's career in international football has made the Caribbean proud.<P class=StoryText align=justify>"We are very honoured that Peter should reach this milestone in his career during the 2nd Digicel Caribbean Cup tournament. Caribbean football has benefited greatly from his contribution both in Jamaica and internationally," Atherton said.<P class=StoryText align=justify>"Peter may have bowed out of international football, but I am sure we will continue to benefit from his expertise in the years to come,î he added.<P class=StoryText align=justify>Prendergast was also assigned to yesterday's closing match in Group E, but is the fourth official and will not hold the whistle, so Monday's game was his last international in the middle.<P class=StoryText align=justify>Prendergast holds the distinction of being the first referee from the Caribbean selected to officiate in two World Cup Finals.<P class=StoryText align=justify>In the 2002 World Cup Finals in Japan and South Korea, he became the second representative from the Caribbean to officiate at the senior World Cup after Trinidad & Tobago's Ramesh Ramdan's selection for the France 1998 competition.<P class=StoryText align=justify>He had decided to end his international career at the Germany 2006 World Cup Finals for which he was picked, but was forced to leave the Finals before competition started after suffering a knee injury.
