Busy schedule for Jamaican refs
Tuesday, August 14, 2007
A number of Jamaican football referees will be officiating in various international tournaments during this month.
Heading the list is FIFA assistant referee, Stephen Brown, who is currently in South Korea where he will officiate in the 2007 FIFA Under-17 World Cup.
Scheduled to leave the island on Thursday for Trinidad and Tobago are referee Kevin Thomas and FIFA assistant referees Paulette Riley and Antoinette Williams, who will all be officiating in the 2007 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Under-15 Youth Cup.
Former FIFA official, Peter Prendergast, now president of the Jamaica Football Referee Association (JFRA), said the association is reaping the rewards from the work that they have put in.
"The foundation has been laid and what we are seeing now is a continuity," he said yesterday.
"Having been out there for 14 years... the reputation of Jamaican referees has become noted worldwide. Locally I have embarked and continue to support our local referees in preparing them for the international circuit," added Prendergast, who officiated at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, noted that Jamaica has 12 officials presently on FIFA's combined list of referees and assistant referees.
Both Thomas and Riley are scheduled to return home on August 27, with Williams flying in four days later.
Brown is slated to arrive home on September 11.
