Impressive Gordon spurs W'house to tour success
    Hurbun Williams, Observer writer
    Friday, August 03, 2007

Waterhouse, the 2005/06 National Premier League football champions, recently returned from a successful one-match tour of the USA where they defeated Brooklyn Knights, 3-2.

Jomo Gordon scored a hat-trick to give the Drewsland-based outfit victory. Waterhouse were hosted by Brooklyn Knights from July 23-26 for the game and according to Waterhouse president Peter Hibbert, who accompanied the team, Brooklyn Knights surprised Waterhouse by taking the lead with a penalty.

Gordon, who was in appealing form, stepped in and equalised. The hosts regained the lead soon after, beating goalkeeper Richard McCallum from close range with a low shot.

Waterhouse upped their tempo and Gordon again brought the visitors level with a well-taken shot. He sealed victory for the visitors in the 83rd minute.

Hibbert said both teams played lovely football and hadn't it been for outstanding goalkeeping by McCallum, "Waterhouse would have surely lost the game".

"We eventually substituted him (McCallum) with Maurice Evans, and when he came off the field he received a standing ovation from the crowd," Hibbert explained.

According to Hibbert, apart from McCallum's fine display, it was an outstanding team effort from Waterhouse. He said an invitation for next year has already been extended.

"We would truly love to reciprocate the invitation, but at present we do not have that type of funds... but this is something we would seriously have to consider," he said.

Following the successful tour, Hibbert said they are considering turning the next visit into a tournament involving teams from Latin America, the Caribbean and possibly Italy.

He said several other teams who saw them play invited them for matches, but "we only had the okay from the JFF for one match and therefore had to decline the invitations".

Waterhouse, who had a squad of 14 players, left Jamaica with only four as they were the only players locally who had visas. The remaining 10 players, including Gordon, Vincent Earle, Damion Williams, Hugh Howell and Damion Powell, were already in the USA fulfilling their yearly contracts in the summer leagues.

Coach Barriga was meeting some of the players officially for the first time and had two sessions with them before the game, and according to Hibbert, "they played some of the best football I've seen Waterhouse play, which to me augurs well for the future of the club".

Also accompanying the team on its short tour were club chairman Bruce Bicknell, team manager Keith Sailsman and treasurer Ainsley Smikle.

Solidarity is not a matter of well wishing, but is sharing the very same fate whether in victory or in death.
