Burrell hails 'silver' Boyz, Downswell

MONTEGO BAY, St James - Former president of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), Captain Horace Burrell, has congratulated the National Under-20 team which won a silver medal at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Burrell, who has long signalled his intention to challenge president Crenston Boxhill at the JFF elections in November, singled out coach Wendell Downswell for special commendation, saying the latter "demonstrated a kind of will and determination never seen before".
The former army man, who was speaking at Tuesday night's awards ceremony for the St James Football Association at Wexford Inn, said he met the team at the Miami International Airport when he was on his way to South Africa and they were en route to Brazil.
He said Downswell mentioned they would be trying their best, despite the team not being as prepared as he would have liked. Burrell described the team's effort as a "fillip that the country now needs".
The Jamaicans defied the odds by reaching the final of the football tournament, but lost 1-2 to Ecuador.
En route to the final, Jamaica beat Colombia 1-0, Argentina 2-0 and Haiti 4-0 in the first round. They then beat Mexico 5-4 on penalties in the semi-final after drawing 0-0 in regulation and extra time.
Burrell said he was pleased with his association with St James FA as it was very good for his business in Montego Bay.
