I think him full of himself. He was offered the youth team which is where you REALLY show if you can coach in a big club like Manu. Taking a £400m squad and moving them along even me can do. Taking an 11 year old team and keeping them motivated and improving as they transition to the *really tough* years from 14-17 (where you make it or don't) is where you prove yourself as a coach.
