Girlz strike late to sink Haiti

Jamaica's Under-20 women's footballers all but qualified for the second round of the CONCACAF Under-20 World Cup Qualifying Series after scoring a hard-fought 3-1 win over Haiti at the BFA National Development Centre here in Nassau, Bahamas yesterday.
The win pushed Jamaica to the top of the three-team points standings with three points, the same as Haiti, who had defeated hosts The Bahamas by a similar score on Wednesday evening.
The Bahamas are at the bottom of the table without a point and just a game to play. Haiti have completed their fixture, and would require the Bahamas to beat Jamaica tomorrow by a similar scoreline if they are to have any chance of advancing to the next phase.
The young Reggae Girlz got their goals through Shanique Mitchell in the 21st, Kimmia Parker five minutes from time and Kimeisha Wilmot in time added. The Haitian goal was scored by Kensi Bobo on the hour mark.
The game, which was scheduled to get underway at 5:00 pm, did not start until 6:00 pm, as heavy rain pelted the field leaving it waterlogged. At one stage the match commissary even tinkered with the idea of rescheduling for a 10:00 am kick off today.
The Haitians threatened at the start of the game, but it was the Girlz who went ahead in the 21st minute, when Mitchell latched on to a pass from captain Peta-Gaye Soman, before unleashing a well directed shot past Estime Madiana in the Haiti goal.
Haiti's best chance of the half came 10 minutes later, but goalkeeper Paula Jackson went full-stretch to pluck Nadia Porporlte's shot out of the net.
And five minutes before the break, Bobo wasted an opportunity when she lifted the ball high and wide from six yards, from a corner kick.
The Jamaicans started the second-half much brighter and nearly added to their score when Semone Honeghan cut through the Haiti defence, but her final pass to Mitchell was overweighted.
Haiti got a goal back on the hour mark, as Bobo's well-placed free-kick gave Jackson very little chance.
They also had two very good opportunities to go ahead in the 70th and 83rd minutes - Bellevue Maria Soline kicked straight to Jackson after breaking loose, then Jackson had to be at her best to deny Porpolte in a one-on-one clash.
But the Girlz came right back and restored their advantage, as Mitchell played a ball from the flank to Parker mid-way the Haitian half, and the powerful midfielder touched the ball around last defender Francois Frantzcia before calmly slotting past Madiana.
Kimeisha Wilmot sealed the victory in time added when she capitalised on a mis-kick from a defender and buried the ball from 10 yards.
Winning coach Xavier Gilbert said the poor playing surface affected his team's normal style of play, though he was pleased with the character and determination of the Girlz.
"The condition kept us from playing our natural game. However, it was a hard game, but the Girlz did extremely well, they showed character, maturity and the experience they have," he said.
A win for the Jamaicans at 4:00 pm at the same venue tomorrow would propel them into the second round and Gilbert has his sights firmly set on nothing but a win.
"I don't think the Bahamas team should give us any real trouble, but we still have to come and play and score goals. We are in a pretty good position and I am confident the Girlz will do it on Sunday," he added.
Haiti's coach, Wilner Lamarre, was a dejected man after the match. "We did not expect that sort of intensity from the Jamaicans, but we made mistakes too and gave away two of three goals. But we should have scored more goals when it was 1-1," he said.
