Peter Prendergast, the first Jamaican to officiate in the final tournament of the World Cup in Japan/South Korea 2002, announced his retirement from international matches on Monday.
Forty-three year old Prendergast, who became a referee in 1987 and who missed out on this year’s finals in Germany because of injury, made the announcement after officiating in the Digicel Caribbean Cup first round Group E top of the table qualifying game in Havana.
Prendergast is a teacher and also the president of the Jamaica Referees' Association. His first international was the USA v. Ireland match of June 9, 1996.
In the meantime, hosts Cuba drubbed Bahamas 6-nil to become the first qualifier for the second round.
The Cubans had a similar 6-nil win over the Turks and Caicos Islands on Saturday.
The Turks and Caicos Islands rebounded from that defeat to register their first ever tournament victory - a 2-nil win over the Cayman Islands.
Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands will now met on Wednesday to determine the second Group E qualifiers.
