RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - Head coach of Jamaica's senior women's football team Charles Edwards has described Wednesday's 11-1 defeat by world number eight-ranked Canada at the 15th Pan American Games as "disappointing".
"In my recent times of listening and watching the Reggae Girlz this (defeat) has got to be ranked as the worst one," a physically and mentally drained Edwards told reporters following the embarrassing result in the Girlz' last Group A match at the Zico Football Centre here.
Edwards said there was no excuse for the Girlz to lose by such a huge margin despite the fact that the team was hard-hit by injuries. Edwards, an architect by profession, went further to say a shortage of tournament preparation was partly responsible for the debacle.
"You could have seen it (under preparation) from the Uruguay game (1-1) where the legs were pretty much gone, playing four games in seven days, we really weren't ready for this kind of tournament in terms of the short time given to prepare the team," he said.
"But we don't want to use that as an excuse because the truth of the matter is we could have played a little better if we were mentally tough enough to stand up out there and fight," Edwards added.
