Rob Friend</DIV><P class=byline>Canadian Press<P class=date>9/4/2006 6:18:54 PM<P class=blurb>MONTREAL (CP) - Rob Friend scored in the 41st minute only moments after taking a kick to the knee as Canada defeated Jamaica 1-0 in a friendly soccer international Monday.

Friend, the Kelowna, B.C., striker from the Heerenveen club in the Netherlands, leapt to head a lobbed pass from midfielder Julian de Guzman at the edge of the penalty area that sailed over goalkeeper Shawn Sawyers and into the net.

Three minutes earlier, Friend had been felled by a kick to the knee on a tackle from defender Damion Stewart, which forced him to take a quick rest on the sidelines and sparked a mass shoving match as de Guzman charged into the fray.

Stewart and Canadian forward Tomasz Radzinski were cautioned by the Costa Rican referee Walter Quesaba and the two sides settled down.

Since losing 2-1 to Spain in 2005, Canada is unbeaten in four friendies, winning 1-0 in Luxembourg in November, tying the U.S. 0-0 in San Diego in January and beating Austria 2-0 in Vienna in March. <BR clear=all><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 align=right border=0><TBODY><TR height=8><TD></TD></TR><TR><TD><SCRIPT type=text/javascript> if(!sops){if(p.sops){var sops=p.sops;}else{var sops="";}} if(dUnitBox==true){boxAd=true;} if(boxAd){if((!dUnitSky)||(!dUnitSuper)||(dUnitBox )){place300x250();}}</SCRIPT></TD></TR><TR><TD></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

A pro-Canada crowd of 6,526 nearly filled the grandstands at the Claude Robillard Stadium on a chilly, overcast afternoon. It included a smattering of green-and-yellow clad Reggae Boyz supporters.

They saw Canada control play in the first half against a mistake-prone Jamaica defence, which led to missed chances early by Radzinski and Friend.

Jamaica woke up in the second half and thought it had the equalizer in the 68th minute, but Teafore Bennett was ruled offside after tipping a rebound off goalkeeper Greg Sutton into the goal. Moments later, Omar Daley was stopped by Sutton just inside the box.

Canada will play a return match in Kingston, Jamaica on Oct. 8.

Both teams were missing several veterans to injuries and club commitments and both had interim head coaches - Stephen Hart for Canada and Carl Brown for Jamaica.

Jamaica was winless in its four previous friendlies - losses of 5-0 to Australia, 4-1 to Ghana, 6-0 to England and a 1-1 draw with the U.S.

Notes - Canada's record is 6-5-1 all-time against Jamaica. . . Canadian defender Chris Pozniak left the game after 20 minutes with an apparent ankle injury and was replaced by Gabe Gervais. . . Sandro Grande went in for Patrice Bernier in the second half and Iain Hume replaced Friend in the 88th. . . Jamaica sent Daley and Fabian Dawkins in for Demar Phillips and Kevin Lamey in the 64th minute.</SPAN>

RE: Canada shuts out Reggae Boyz 1-0

Never should we loose to a team like Canada we are not playing to our strengths and thats what it takes to be successful we can do <U>so much better</U> it is there right in front of our faces. <U>Some one please listen to me WE CAN MASH THIS.</U> We have a system that will work THAT NO ONE IS USING Jamaica can be the first and shock the world. Any one like to see Ja go into the final rounds of the world cup in 2010 that's what I m saying this will do for us. It's called the defensive blitzing system it demandsdiscipline and speed and it's better than the system the Germans, the Brazilians, the Italians, and the English use and it's available to JFF and John Barnes, let's see if we can get them to at least investigate. Love and respect.

Well we should not loose to a team like canada reference is a bit strange since we usually get regular buss ass from them. I think over 11 games is now even but really we dont do all that well. If you look at the two squad yesterday they had a way more accomplish squad with bigger players. Radinksi, plays for Fulham and is a very good player. Deguzman in LaLiag (he is jamaican btw) Slateri at spurs, the goalscoreer i holland and so on. Most of them went through the u20 ans so on. Its not an idiot team and now with harty and yallop you see them trying to keep the ball and play football that suit the players they have. When you only loose 2-1 to spain and 1-0 to portugal you are improving.

And then draw with Jamaica 1-1. (Yes, I will take this one as a draw, even thought we don't deserve it, but Teofore's goal was good!)

</TD><TD align=left> <HR style="COLOR: #ffffff" SIZE=1>First of all this Canadian team should feel very lucky to come away with this victory. I personally saw a 1-1 tie game in Montreal; can someone explain to me how a rebound off a keeper be called offside in anyway?

ONeil Thompson and Demar Phillips did well as players with little international experience at this level. Sawyers laps was the difference in the result as he showed he can perform at this level with the right pro setup.
I was most impressed with the development of Stewart and most disappointed with the play of Reid as he displayed very poor positioning, lock of concentration and poor communication skills (ears tough) for such a gifted player.

As a team they defended very well in their defensive 1/3 of the field, but did not have enough quality in attack as a team until the substitutions. The fitness level of the local players was very poor. I know the NPL is just in pre-season but that is no excuse for national players not to be in football shape at all times.

The one thing this game showed me is that the JFF cannot afford to keep any available player out of this setup; we need a Lamey, a Goodison, and King on standby for selection. Our biggest problem is self hate. </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

A Rob Friend goal in the 42nd minute gave Canada a 1-0 win over Jamaica in their international friendly at the Claude Robillard Complex in Montreal yesterday.

Canada, playing their first game in Montreal in over 11 years, turned in a workman-like performance on their Labour Day for a deserved win.

The Maple Leaf Boys improved their head-to-head clash with the Reggae Boyz to six wins, five draws and one defeat dating back to 1985.

The red and white-clad home team scored the winner when the tall Friend rose high to head home a right-sided cross minutes before half time.

GoalkeeperShawn Sawyers, charged off his line to intercept the cross, but was not even close, allowing Friend to head into an empty goal from the edge of the box.

Jamaica, under interim coach, Carl Brown, turned in a tepid performance lacking verve and the Boyz showed that several changes will be necessary for the return game on October 8 in Kingston.

Brown started with Teafore Bennett and Kevin Lamey, last season premier league's Most Valuable Player, upfront and paired the twin towers of Oneil Thompson and Khari Stephenson in central midfield.

                            Senior cap

The wily Demar Phillips, earning his first senior cap, started on the left of the midfield with Jamal Campbell-Ryce who impressed in spurts starting on the right.

Damion Stewart partnered Jermaine Taylor at the heart of the defence with Garfield Reid and captain Fabian Davis the full backs.

But the 74th-ranked Reggae Boyz were no match for the more experienced Canada ranked eight places below at 82.

The likes of Paul Stalteri, Josh Simpson, Julian de Cuzman, Thomas Radzinki, Marco Rada, Friend and Chris Poznisk proved too much for the Reggae Boyz, especially in midfield.

Canada missed a glorious chance to open the scoring early but Friend spooned his shot over the bar from close range with only the goalkeeper to beat.

A couple more half chances went their way before finally getting the winning goal three minutes before the interval.

Jamaica came out more purposeful in the second half but still gave Canada little to worry about except for a long-range powerhouse shot from Thompson that deflected off the Canadian goalkeeper. Bennett tapped in the rebound but he was ruled offside.

Substitute Omar Daley, provided a moment of individual brilliance, beating four players to set up Bennett with only the goalkeeper to beat, but Bennett's tame shot was blocked.

The Reggae Boyz will return home and prepare for the Digicel Caribbean Cup tournament before hosting Canada on October 8 at the National Stadium. </DIV>

The Reggae Boyz suffered their third straight loss in international competition after losing 1-0 to Canada yesterday in Montreal.
