  • Is the English Premier League Killing Jamaican Football?

Former Nigeria international Sam Sodje has stated that Nigerians are so into the English Premier League (EPL) and that is killing Nigeria football.

He said the obsession with the EPL has made Nigerians believe players who do not feature in the Premier League are not good enough.

I think Sodje may have a case as it relates to Nigeria's game being that they hav a far richer football history than Jamaica. Outside of 1998, there's not much that we can for us to brag about. Of course the recent GC run is nothing to laugh at. Fact is, Jamaica's notable achievements in the game has some heavy English influence base on the "UB40s". I think we would be hard pressed to show how the English league has negatively affect our game.

Regarding Jamaica (and Nigeria to some extent) it's still pretty much conjecture... however, it would appear, given the composition of the Reggaeboyz, that English football (EPL and other leagues) which provides half the team, does have an impact on JA football.

Whether that impact is positive or negative is moot.

I don't think it is moot. I think it raises that other question whether it has impacted Jamaican football negatively or positively
