Adu scores three; United States dominates Poland 6-1

MONTREAL (AP) -- Freddy Adu scored three goals and the United States recovered from an early deficit to rout Poland 6-1 Tuesday in the most lopsided result so far at the Under-20 World Cup.
Danny Szetela, whose parents were born in Poland, scored twice and New York Red Bulls striker Jozy Altidore added another to put the United States atop Group D.
The 18-year-old Adu, the Real Salt Lake midfielder who is in his fourth season in Major League Soccer and is playing in his third U20 World Cup, has said he would like to showcase his skills at the youth championship to impress European clubs.
After Dawid Janczyk gave Poland the lead in the fifth minute, Szetela -- who also accounted for the Americans' only goal in their opening 1-1 draw with South Korea -- tied it four minutes later with a header that struck the crossbar before entering the goal.
Adu then struck a sliding left-footer in off the post in the 20th and scored three minutes into first-half injury time to put the Americans in control. He completed the scoring with five minutes remaining, sent in alone by Robbie Rogers after the Columbus Crew forward had intercepted a ball.
Besides the margin of victory, the result was surprising after the Americans' struggled to get the draw with the Koreans on Saturday while Poland stunned Brazil 1-0 in their group opener.
The Americans put 11 shots on goal while U.S. goalkeeper and Adu's Real Salt Lake teammate, Chris Seitz, faced only four shots. Szetela added his second in the 51st before Altidore gave the United States a 5-1 lead in the 70th. The barrage of goals quieted the strong contingent of chanting Polish fans among the announced crowd of 35,801 at Olympic Stadium.
