If the infraction sends you to the law books for interpretation*, and the ensuing interpretation rules in favour of the attacking side, it could be construed as "soft". Maybe, there is some other word... not that the ruling is wrong. At the end of the day, a woman is either pregnant or not, there is no "kind of" pregnant, and it may very well be the same with penalties.
*Of course, our on-field officials do this in a matter of seconds (it's all in their head)
Why would anyone who knows football have to go to the law book for that offence? Defenders have been called for that for decades! His hand was in a very unnatural position. Matters not if his back was turned.
Well now that I am watching the replay I asked what my reaction would have been had it not been called.... "Penalty ref!!! Penalty!!" would clearly have been my shout! So yeah, the descriptor don't really matter! in hindsight I must have unconsciously used the word to appease the aggrieved!!
