  • Boyz Taking A Hit With MLS Salaries

But Jamaican Damani Ralph, a former MLS player and current agent for several Boyz, doesn't believe Jamaicans in MLS are unfairly targeted with lower compensation.

Players' value, he explained, is tied to several elements, including quality, experience, and exposure. Jamaicans, especially those coming directly out of US colleges or the local Premier League, are viewed as unknown quantities.

"There is a structure," explained Ralph last month. "... People don't know what they will get out of (the players) at the beginning."

In national striker Deshorn Brown, however, MLS quickly found out. Brown scored 10 goals for Colorado Rapids in each of his first two MLS seasons after US college. This season, Brown plays in Europe after being guaranteed US$123,000 in 2014, according to the union. Ralph, Brown's agent, denied money was the reason the player left MLS.

"The aim was that Deshorn wanted to move to Europe," he said.

Colorado then signed Republic of Ireland striker Kevin Doyle, a former English Premier League (EPL) player. He is guaranteed US$1.2 million in 2015. Doyle had scored two goals in 12 appearances through August 16.

The MLS salary structure is definitely not level. A lot needs to be done as the wash up European players get overpaid. Lot of work to be done here.

          Market & value...relationship?

Seems to me credibility of league from which player arrives plays some part in determining players' value...

Fans come out to see the stars, even though they may be washed up. Employers always pay the least amount of money that they can get away with. If you don't like it, see the door for employment elsewhere.

Interesting article but not balance and does not address the matter. I would say the Jamaica player salary is on par with the average player who comes out of college as a mid to low pick ( so not the Kyle Larins) but your average guys. You can't compare it with Clint or Josey Altidore and those guys because they are all getting DP salaries . Michael Bradley is a DP so those salaries will skew the average. I do agree the league salary is out of whack but it seems we are comparing DPs to regular salaries.

                  MLS doesn't owe us anything.

quality will out though. it is harder to make a big name for yourself in the MLS so if you come into the mls at "entry level" yuh gonna be paid "entry level" fees. lampard and gerrard are proven in one of the top leagues in the world and so yes they can command a huge fee.

other leagues scout the mls for entry level players into their leagues, hardly any mls bred player will get a big contract to play in Europe (comparatively speaking) it is for them to go there and make a name for themselves o get the big NEXT contract ....

look at the difference in salary for Clint Dempsey when he was playing for NE than when he transfer back from the EPL, same thing with Altidore.

MLS is an opportunity, hopefully the salary will get better but you have choices, or do we???

the options are what they are and I suspect the players and their agents try to exercise whatever they consider to be their best option.

the epl remains a far bridge because of the strict work permits requirement but other countries in Europe should be in play and those have been exercised over the years especially in the Scandinavian countries.

                        Good cigar.

                        As our personal experience tells...
Additionally the history on quality of play(=integrity) of league from which player arrives (marketplace ranking of nation's quality of play as demonstrated by it's NATIONAL SENIOR TEAM and to a lesser extent it's NATIONAL AGE GROUP TEAMs coupled with "buyer country, buyer league and seller country salaries") affect negotiating strengths.

                        Tuff 'ead Don1, please note?!
