Gordon's scoring spree lifts Galaxy over Wizards

CARSON, Calif. -- Alan Gordon scored two goals in nine minutes to give the Los Angeles Galaxy a 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Wizards on Saturday night.
Gordon broke a 1-1 tie in the 56th minute. Landon Donvan sent his 37-yard free kick toward Gordon, who headed the ball into the net from eight yards between defenders Jose Burciaga and Tyson Wahl for his third goal in two games.
The Galaxy (9-12-5) earned its fourth victory in five games, including one in the U.S. Open Cup tournament, and moved within two points of a playoff spot with six games left.
Gordon gave Los Angeles a 1-0 lead in the 47th minute with a sliding shot off Cobi Jones' crossing pass from the right flank.
The Wizards (8-13-6) tied the score in the 52nd minute on Shavar Thomas's 6-yard header off Burciaga's corner kick.
Kansas City had another chance to tie in the final minute but Davy Arnaud's 26-yard half-volley hit the crossbar.
Wizards forward Eddie Johnson, who played for the United States in this year's World Cup, left the game in the 16th minute after straining his left hamstring during a tackle by the Galaxy's Tyrone Marshall.
