  • Jamaica vs Costa Rica - my views and player ratings

I thought Jamaica was pitiful in the first half. Costa Rica was toying with us as we just couldn’t touch the ball and they rang rings around us. It came as no surprise when they got back on even terms and then went ahead. We seemed very challenged when it came to the basics of the game and we were very predictable.

The second half was much better, even though that took some time to get going and we always seemed vulnerable to the long balls over the top. I thought the fast breaks could have been better executed. A fast break is never one man going it alone. Even if he does appear to, he should have some decoys on either side. And there was one occasion when that extra pass to either of the two players to the left could have sent them straight on to goal. Instead, a shot that had little chance of scoring was taken.

Why are our set pieces so bland? Are we incapable of being creative as CR was in scoring against us? We do not have players who can take direct kicks to goal so maybe we need to try something different.

When we got going it was fun to see, making the quick outlet passes to players with speed. However, with all that, having CR on the backfoot and scrambling, we did not create many quality chances. And we should remember - our two goals were not as a result of good teamplay, whereas CR’s were!

These are initial thoughts on players’ performance in the match as I can’t be bothered to watch it over again.

Dwayne Miller – made some strange advances at times, and some late ones, but I wouldn’t blame him for the goals. Starts the game well, most times. He should now know never to throw the ball out to Morgan. - 6

Kemar Lawrence – did fairly well, but I thought he played better in the Copa matches. Still needs to appear more comfortable on the ball. He could be much more effective with better players around him. Stupidly went for goal from a ridiculous angle when a cross could have spelt trouble for CR – 6.5

Jermaine Taylor – not terribly convincing for me. Made a terrible error when he headed the ball in the danger area. Luckily for us, the Costa Rican who received the ball didn’t bother to bury it in the back of the net – 5.5

Wes Morgan – have all the teams figured out our weakness now? Just lob the ball over and if your forwards have any speed at all, you are going to leave this big guy for dead! Once CR found this out, they tried it over and over again and had Taylor and Morgan looking a bit rattled on a few occasions well. With a little composure, Wes could have saved, instead of scored that goal – 4

Adrian Mariappa – enthusiastic player who works hard. Needs to make better and faster decisions. - 6.5

Jevaughn Watson – plays bravely, not afraid to pile and shift. Whereas some may see that as unnecessary flair, such braggadocio gives the team confidence, something that was severely lacking in the first half. Changed the point of attack with good long passes. Horrible tackler. – 7

Rudolph Austin – was his usual busy self, but played more within his abilities. Also did well to spread the ball. Can’t take a freekick to save his life – 7

Joel McAnuff – Needs to play closer to the forwards to be effective, but he tried. Persevered and got a lucky goal in my opinion. – 7.5

Giles Barnes – Started slowly, like the rest of the team. Not sure of his overall impact on the game. - 5

Garath McCleary – seemed confused when trying to beat defenders. Needs to decide on his actions much quicker, like when he shot to goal to give us the lead, and could use some more skill. Did manage to get a couple good crosses over. – 7

Simon Dawkins – not as good as belied by his grin. Took a great one time cross from a great delivery by McCleary that almost made the difference. – 6.5

Darren Mattocks – able to use his skill (and arrogance) to make space for himself, but his shooting is woeful. If only he could bring that composure he demonstrates for club to his international matches. Could make some smarter runs on the breaks as well. – 5.5

Good post, as you said our goals were not build up goals, this is where we are really lacking, case in point was the four on two break, is like we can't figure out the weak point and exploit it when we have the advantage, that should have been a clear goal.

Our advantage still remains the counter one on one in the open field, if we can learn to pass better and quicker it is going to be murdeee!!!!
