ANTOFAGASTA, Chile -- Reggae Boyz head coach Winfried Schaefer was left a satisfied man after his two new recruits Michael Hector and Lance Laing gave decent first-time performances in helping the team to a 2-0 victory over first division club Cobreloa FC at the Parque Juan Lopez yesterday.
Defender Kemar Lawrence opened the scoring in minute 14 and veteran Jobi McAnuff made the game safe just after the hour mark. But though the result provided a bit of confidence, the coach was more concerned with the qualities of Hector, a 6'4" defender from Reading FC in England, and the powerfully built FC Edmonton left-sided player Laing.
"It was important for new players like Hector to play with Wes Morgan and Lance Laing, who I had seen only on the TV, and I think we have two good players more now," reasoned Schaefer at the end of the closed-door contest.
Hector played the entire game, staring at central defence with Morgan, the Leicester City captain, then he accompanied Mariappa in the second half before the Crystal Palace defender was replaced by Jermaine Taylor with 23 minutes remaining.
Laing entered the field at the half-time break.
Though Hector and Laing received high grades from the coach, he was quick to point out that there were issues with which he was not happy.
"I was not very happy with how we switched the ball from right to left and left to right in midfield, but we have three days left for training for the match against Uruguay, so it's okay, but I hope against Uruguay we play much better."
