All missing members of the Haitian U-17 national team have returned to JFK Airport according to the Associated Press. The AP quoted Radio Soleil, a Haitian radio station in New York. The team departed JFK Thursday for Seoul, South Korea, to play in a tournament
Felix Augustin, the Haitian consul in New York, said the disappearance was a scheme engineered by USA friends and relatives. "These children were manipulated", he said.
Augustin said the teenagers voluntarily entered a van during a lunch break at JFK. They ended up scattered all over New York City and as far away as Boston.
Pierre Elusma, one of the Haitian players, told LE NOUVELLISTE newspaper that they did not intend to flee. He said his group got separated from the main group at JFK. "The airport is very big, and we wanted to look around. We got lost and couldn't find the rest of the group."
