He has not said he is not willing to honour the remaining two years, but he has to hand in a transfer request. I am not sure if he has done that and I am not sure of the rules around it. I think that once it does happen, there are rules protecting the player and club, but I'm not sure what they are. Mo might know.

Remember Suarez wanted to leave and FSG kept him for an additional year.

These American owners are not just in this because they like the game and they will not be bullied if it is not of benefit to them.

          Exactly!

What would the league become if players want to move the first time somebody whispers nonsense in their ears?

          Honour your contract!

So unions are terrible for requesting a negotiated contract during the life of current contract? ...and is that so in any other situation where that is requested?

btw - What does to negotiate imply?
              Just asking!

other teams are lining up more lucrative contract offers...either Liverpool sells him and he cashes in or he plays out his contract and then cashes in...why sign a new contract at Liverpool for less than your market value?

“That is double the deal Liverpool have tabled to try and keep the England international happy at Anfield – and nearly six times times his current £35,000-a-week wages.

“It means the total financial package involved in buying Sterling could be around £100m because Liverpool’s resolve to keep a player – who is under contract for two more seasons – will only be tested if City offer a transfer fee of around £50m.

“City’s move is being driven by sporting director Txiki Begiristain who is determined to sign top English players this summer to help the club meet the ‘home-grown’ quotas.
                  No!
I do not see him getting at ManCity, BoyU, Chelsea what players need - money & playing 'good' time! ...he would have to improve on his performances tremendously to 'live' in those TEAMS!!!

...oooh add all the top TEAMS in the big 5 EUROPEAN countries as having him rub the pine if his quality remains the same. Such rubbing the pine usually leads to quick 'dun'!!!

This says it all - NOT FOR PLAYING QUALITY BUT...

Perhaps Sterling is telling, to hell with (playing) football give me the immediate gratification 'now' money brings?

He is not breaking any rules, and there is nothing wrong to want a transfer before his contract is up, it is the way they are going about it that is causing angst. The club can't do anything if they want to keep him and he hasn't handed in a transfer request. After that, I believe all options open up to both sides.

Paul Marin, I have never seen a transfer request, but I can't imagine it being anything more than a formal request to leave a club, cutting through all the rumours and hearsay that would have been flying around the place. A transfer request certainly can't void an existing contract.

I guess it "allows" other clubs to formally put in their bids for that player because up to that time, I doubt if other clubs would have said anything official and play their hand carelessly when no one knows for sure the intentions of the player and his agent.

But the main point is, as far as the holding club is concerned, if they wish, they may now consider serious bids from other clubs, knowing fully well that they still hold the handle!

As a FIFA agent, I was expecting a more informed input from you on the matter. Isn't it the case that in the last year of his contract, if the player does not have a renewed contract offer from his club to which he has agreed, he is free to speak with other suitors without having to get permission from Liverpool to do so? Well, I think it is in the last 6 months of his final contract year when he is free to speak with other clubs without his parent club's permission.

Anyway, if the player decides he doesn't want to stay, Liverpool would be stupid not to take the opportunity to maximize their take on his market value at the point in time. It would not make good business sense to park the player just to satisfy one's own ego. I say let him go, but put a price on him which the club can use to acquire just as good or even better talent. For goodness sake man, you running a business, not a higgler' stall.

they too are making a business decision largely forced by him.

let his contract expire or reluctantly trade him before so that they can make some money.

Well they didn't sell Suarez until the last year. Liverpool wanted to buy Danny Ings in the January window and Burnley said no and made his contract run down.

When you have money and power you can do a lot of things. Let me hear from the owners and see. See they cancelled their meeting with Sterling rep?
