Off the back of winning the double in Arsene Wenger's first season in charge, there was hope of a strong European campaign in 1998/99.
With home games at Wembley, and a reasonable draw handing Arsenal Panathinaikos, Dynamo Kiev and RC Lens, the Gunners didn't have the hardest introduction to top-level European football under Wenger.
But the Wembley experiment went badly wrong, and a 3-1 defeat away in Kiev meant Arsenal needed to win their final two games to progress. Mickael Debeve stole in at the far post to convert a cross, and Wenger's first taste of Champions League football in north London was doomed.
A 3-1 win in Greece against Panathinaikos in the final game was a consolation, but an entirely meaningless one.
