Sporting, St George's advance to NPL

By Livingston Scott Observer staff reporter
    Thursday, June 07, 2007

Clarendon will get a taste of top-flight local football for the first time in seven years - following Hazard's move to St Catherine in 2000 - after Sporting Central held Granville FC to a 0-0 draw at Brancourt to book their place in the National Premier League.

At Lynch Park, home side St George's United stopped Police Nationals 3-1, courtesy of goals from Hilelide Dean (30th minute), Omar Brissett (40th) and Omar Henderson (87th), to also advance. Sheldon Campbell replied for the Lawmen.
Sporting finished atop the four-team group with 11 points and a better goal-difference over St George's, who are returning to the NPL after more than 19 years.

St George's are the first team from Portland to grace the Premier League since Taurus in the early 1990.
Yesterday's game at Brancourt was short on quality, although the hosts started brightly and dominated play and the chances during the first half.

Victorious coach Kevin Williams said it was one of the most gruelling encounters he had faced in the sport.
"I understand the young players they were a bit anxious... but we were very tentative and it didn't allow us to play the type of football we'd like to," he said.

The visitors slowly came into their own midway the first-half and gave the home team a few scares. However, the standard of the game dropped considerable in the second half and the chances were rare for both teams.

Sporting's topscorer Oneke Ford should have given his team the lead 10 minutes into the second half, but he shot into the side-netting from six yards after bursting through the Granville defence.
Granville twice came close through Jason Rose, who redirected David Gillard's cross into the hands on goalkeeper Valdo Ricketts from six yards in the 58th.

The lanky dreadlocked midfielder then outjumped Ricketts to a poor clearance from inside the area, but his header landed just wide after 66 minutes.

The home team tried to hold possession, but their passing game was woeful and they frequently turned the ball over. They were given a breather in the 77th minute when defender Rodney Hines was shown the red card for a flagrant challenge on Karl Wiggan.
Granville had a glorious chance to steal a win at the death when top striker Jermaine Anderson latched onto a pass from Dushawn Woolry, but his half-volley flew into the side netting with three minutes to spare in regulation time.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

SPORTING CENTRAL Academy and St. George's realised their dreams of playing in the top tier of local football as the Wray and Nephew National League play-offs came to close yesterday.

For Sporting Central, a 0-0 draw against Granville was good enough to secure their spot as they finished on 11 points - ahead of St. George's who amassed the same total - on goal difference. St. George's polished off their long season in fine style when they downed already-eliminated Police National 3-1.

"Us winning brings the highest level of football to this side of country and that's a big thing," said an elated Everton King, president of the Portland club.

"It brings vibrancy to the community and we expect to have people even from the surrounding parishes coming to watch the games," the St. George's president said.

    Commanding the game

St. George's left nothing to chance and first-half goals by Hillelide Dean and Omar Brissett put them in command. Sheldon Campbell struck for Police National at the start of the second half but Omar Henderson slammed the door shut with a goal midway the second half for St. George's.

There were no goals at Brancourt where Sporting hosted Granville, but that did not mean there weren't plenty of frayed nerves.

"If I was someone with a weak heart, I'd be worried about a heart attack as this was one of the most gruelling games I've been involved in," said Sporting Central coach Kevin Williams.

"I think they were tentative as a team and I understand the nerves but the result is what counts," Williams said.

Williams saw his team dominate most of the first half but fail to find the back of the net.

    Delightful football

Granville's Loxley Reid dived full stretch to keep out a cracker from Gary Hughan as early as the 14th minute. Another spell of delightful football from Sporting ended with Oneke Ford bearing down on Reid 10 minutes later. Again, alert goalkeeping by the custodian, who flung himself at the feet of the striker in the 32nd minute, ensured the game remained scoreless.

Granville had the better opportunities in the second half. The best of them fell to their captain, Jermaine Anderson, who found the ball at his feet a mere 10 yards away from goal after a scuffle in midfield.

However, his powerful shot in the 90th minute taken from a slight angle, rolled harmlessly into the side netting.

So Tracy Reid's and Granville's run came to an end! Pity they would have injected some additional life...even if only for their first round matches, in next season's EPL.

CONGRATS to Sporting Central and St. George's. Hopefully they will aid the drive for improved standards of play.

Hopefully St Georges can give their youngsters exposure and send them abroad instead of to other local clubs because I have no doubt that's what The Murray clan will be aiming for with sporting Central. These two organizations prepared and benefitted from youth and they deserve it and Jamaica talent pool has just widened because these two teams are producers of talent not just end users...
