  • Paraguay Shuts Up Mexicans 1-0

Oscar Cardozo scored in the 89th minute, completely against the run of play to shock Mexico and its faithful 1-0 at Estadio Azteca.

After a fairly even but lackluster first half, Mexico dominated the second half. In the 52nd minute, Fernando Arce fired a rocket on goal, but Paraguay goalkeeper Justo Villar batted it away.

A few minutes later, Omar Bravo, shooting from the right side of the penalty area, hit the inside of the left goal post. The ball rebounded out,
missing another Mexican player in the goal mouth.

Paraguay's goal came on a counter attack. Nelson Cuevas took a long pass, splitting the defense. He passed to Cardozo, who fired the ball low just inside the left post.

The game was nasty, with four yellow cards and several arguments over hard tackles and referee's decisions. Mexico showed their complete lack of class as Cuahaltemoc Blanco tried to pick a fight with Villar at the entrance of the tunnel leading to the dressing rooms.

      Now there's a surprise.

"Donovan was excellent. We knew he was a good player, but he really didn't do anything wrong in the whole game and made it difficult for us."
