Youth players must play in different roles

Gamma & Rockman...please?!
Put simply, when we have the ball, we all attack and when we don't, we all get small to defend. 24 years as a youth coach has taught me this is something most American parents struggle to understand. Seemingly if we call them defenders, that's all they do, so if we have the ball, they stay pinched in and back by their goal no matter who has the ball. Anyone who watched the World Cup or any professional or high-level youth game knows this is not how the game is played.
btw - Who was it that asked; Why do defenders go up for corners?

It is such a coincidence that in a post we were discussing
the player of the future being expert at playing each position?
Would the following lead into that reality of future players being expert at each position?
3. At 11 or 12, they understand space and that each position has slightly different skill sets and for the player to understand the whole subject they need to experience the different skill sets. To use a school math analogy, a good math teacher would not only teach addition because they know that would produce one dimensional simplistic students without the complete skill set to tackle advanced math problems of the future. Similarly, the advanced coach will teach their players the skills and tactics to play in a variety of positions. They learn a little bit more about the support a fullback needs in midfield if they have played as both parts of the equation, as a fullback and a midfield player. They understand playing as a shadow forward and finding pockets of space if they have been the midfield player with no options to pass to as their forwards just run blindly to goal. Each position comes with a slightly different skill set needed to be successful but what should be obvious is that to fulfill their potential and truly understand the game they need have some mastery of all the skill sets and associated tactics."Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."

The fact is...
...as the dynamic of a game goes players find themselves in positions where the individual role rotates through attacker, midfielder, defender as demanded.
In each and any game of high quality each *outfield player shall find self at different times fulfilling different roles. It is a TEAM game! ...and each player must be willing to provide full professional assistance to teammates and TEAM at all times!
*Not leaving out the 'keeper although it is fact good TEAMs can most often survive without more than one player being expert at that position on the field. It is wothwhile to bear in mind the role of a defender who often finds self as last obstacle to the opposing TEAM. Yup!...that defender, the 'keeper, must consider self the TEAM's last 'sweeper'! ...again, YUP!...the 'keeper should also be 'good with both feet and his head' and be always willing to do 'sweeping' outside of his penalty-area!!!!"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Just recently I just spoke a parent on one of my son's team. He love playing defense and the coach let him play it most of last season. He is good at it but this season he was put upfront and was lost.
My sons both play defense and offense well at this stage. Even if they are going to be defenders, they must know to overlap and score when the opportunity comes, they must know a forward header from a defensive one, they must be able to shoot well and if they are playing offense they must be able to come back and be effective in a defensive posture.
Also some teams have a real good player in a position but he has to sit because there are others ahead of this player and he is not as effective anywhere else on the field. Kids must be somewhat adaptable for the reason that where their strength lies now might not be the one that is developed. Tim Howard was a good youth forward but.......- Don't let negative things break you, instead let it be your strength, your reason for growth. If Liverpool defends is leaking goals Balotelli must now play centre half?
You cannot approach the game by thinking a position is confined to specific blades of grass...and that is why from time to time I say, forget formations=challenging those who wish to learn about the game to think in an abstract manner...consider 'all possibilities' and 'all possible eventualities' during games. ...particularly in context of, as for 'your TEAM' the aim is best outcomes!"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. That maybe true but some players are weak in certain positions no matter how good they are in others, and it is the coaches that have to use them in position of strength. In the pro game it is very different from in the developmental game. In the developmental game you want players to develop their strength on work on their weakness as well. It may cost you but you are not losing anything and maybe gaining a better player
In the Pros. it may cost too much. Would you put Balotelli in Midfield to distribute balls???- Don't let negative things break you, instead let it be your strength, your reason for growth. Life is for living and I won't spend my life feeling cheated and downtrodden.

What does the ad say? - Everybody knows that!

btw - Off the top of my head it appears Sterling has far more touches in a game than Balotelli.
Aside: Wonder what the stats on this Liverpool TEAM say on passes to players in more attacking positions.Last edited by Karl; November 14, 2014, 02:49 PM."Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."

"And if we are to focus on his last few matches, he has done that very, very well! "
What has he done very well at??? His coach said he has to start scoring, that is his primary job and he hasn't done that. Again you expect a pass or two from him but not "ball handling". I doubt the coach would want him in any defensive position except corners and free kick. Do you think it is by design that Sterling has more touches??? I wonder why?
Even with Sterling giving the ball away he has created many more chances. Coaches can afford to gamble on wingers knowing that you going to lose some but will create some.- Don't let negative things break you, instead let it be your strength, your reason for growth.
