  • MLS should not change how they run the

    league anytime soon.

Every time I’m engaged in or hear discussions about the MLS format, the 3 main “criticisms” I’ve heard is –
    1. It’s a single entity league.
    2. It has a closed membership, so there’s no promotion and relegation.
    3. There’s a salary cap, which prevents teams from getting “top” stars.

    This is my opinion –
First let me say that I don’t think MLS needs to adopt the popular European model to be successful. It’s a young league (now in it’s 19th season), and MLS has to find a system that is going to grow and strengthen the league, thereby making it profitable.
Single entity league – I agree with this for the start, to make sure that the proper systems are in place and help each team to have an equal footing. In the next 5 – 10 years I would be in favor of changing to operating as an association of independently owned teams and adopt a corporate structure like the NFL.
Closed membership with no promotion and relegation – Have no problem with this. It’s a system that’s been used in other professional sports here (NBA, NFL, MLB & NHL), and they are very successful and profitable…..There have been MLS teams that have had a very bad season one year and through improved scouting, management & coaching came back the next year to be one of the top teams in the league (last season DC United had the worst record in the league, winning only 3 games, and so far, this season, they have the best record in the eastern conference & have qualified for the playoffs).
Salary cap – Don’t get rid of it. It helps to maintain parity in the league and forces teams to focus on youth development, scouting, management and coaching to improve, grow and win. For MLS first 18 seasons they have had 10 different champions & 7 in the last 10. Compare that to EPL who has 4 and 3 during the same time period; Bundesliga 6 & 4; La Liga 5 & 3; and Serie A 5 & 3.

NOTE – So far MLS has done a very good job growing the league and making it profitable. Last year I saw a publication listing the most profitable soccer leagues by revenue and MLS was ahead of the Portuguese Primeira Liga, Belgian Pro League, Scottish Premier League, Swiss Super League, Norwegian Tippeligaen, Superleague Greece and the Danish Superliga, all older than MLS. The Dutch Eredivisie generated only 90 million euros more (452 to 362).….MLS will now (starting next year) get $90 million per year from the new TV contract, up from $25 million, Adidas has renegotiated its contract & increased its annual payment by $10 million and Etihad has signed a contract with them.

Part of the reason why the league does so well is the US economy. I mean, can we really say the MLS is better than the Portuguese or Scottish leagues?

Oh yes we can!! Much better than the 2 countries you listed...and more.

And your partial reason is kinda on the weak side. ...

Lots of you would love to see MLS falter and fail.

      USAF...... on your opening piece.

Some folks find it difficult to part with systems that they grew up with-- and accustomed to. Nothing new can be better.

      Nice submission

Mosiah!!! Where did I say MLS was better than Primeira Liga & Scottish Premier League???.....I stated that MLS was ahead of them in generating revenue.....and I will say MLS also has more parity and is more competitive.

The Primeira Liga is in its 80th season. During the 79 completed seasons, apart from 2 seasons, Belenenses won 1945 - 46 & Boavista won 2000 - 01, the other 77 seasons have been dominated by Benfica, Porto & Sporting CP.

Is it the Scottish Premier League or the Celtic-Rangers-Celtic League???

Did I say you said that?!?

I just don't want anyone to think that making more money means it is better.

          Chill yo!!!

Outside of the global brands, that league is horrendous. You have to look no further than the performance of a player like Kris Boyd after leaving the MLS to go over there or Andre Hainault who was Jermaine Taylor's back up at Houston.

The economy - Specific to the robustness of it and its shear size!!!
All those old leagues the MLS is being compared to has much smaller population market size. US market potential by volume is currently tops!!!

I believe the MLS is better than a lot of the European leagues to include the Scottish league. Outside of Celtic, there is not much to worry about in Scotland as it relates to quality opposition. I would put it on the same level as the English Championship league. Personally, Inthink more of our local players should strive to break into MLS or the Mexican league and leave Europe alone.

The main reason the MLS is profitable is because they can do market analysis and research before putting a team in a location. They don't have promotion and demotion. They can place teams in places like Portland, Seattle, Toronto etc. that have a huge fan base.

Look at a team like Blackpool which have a very small fanbase, what do they add to the EPL? The economy is one thing but when team like Miami was draining the MLS they simply closed it and look elsewhere. Also the Salary cap is another reason why they are profitable. Portuguese and Scottish league don't have such rigid salary structure. The economy is one part but the overall management of the league is another.
                      • Don't let negative things break you, instead let it be your strength, your reason for growth. Life is for living and I won't spend my life feeling cheated and downtrodden.

I see where Benfica sent 2 of their promising youngsters to play at Orlando City FC this season, to help with their development/growth, and have gotten their 1st national team call up, for Portugal's U20, this week.
