    U-20 exercise - Lessons learned

    U-20s failure to qualify for its FIFA Age Group Championships – Lessons learned!

    The facts:

    The Under-20 squad is in its fourth week of training and today plays a South Central Confederation Under-20 team at Brancourt in Clarendon. The first stage of qualification for the World Cup will be the Caribbean leg of qualifiers in Cayman. Jamaica will compete in Group B with the hosts, Bermuda and Puerto Rico between July 23-27.

    -----------

    The manner of play on the international scene - Age-Group National TEAMs through National Senior TEAMs has been the on the field aggregation operating as one unit=A TEAM!

    Such action demands much sharing of the ball.

    Reasons:
    - Football is a Game of SUDDEN....thus the aim is always to catch the opponent 'off-guard' or unprepared for the actions of the TEAM with the ball.

    - Limiting of time that the opponent has to 'set-up' on defense.

    - Being first to the ball - on Possession and at the 'earliest' after it has been lost.

    - Increase %age probability of winning each/the game.

    -------

    The end result of current teaching (coaching) in Jamaica is consistent failure:
    - to win matches against higher ranked TEAM...the world FIFA Ranked top 30 teams;

    - consistent failure to qualify for FIFA World Championships;

    - consistent failure to win matches against club TEAMs in our CONCACAF Confederation outside of those within the CFU sub-group;

    - consistent failure of more than extremely megre numbers of players who attend on trials in Europe to gain professional contracts;

    - consistently minuscule numbers who attend on trials in the US MLS gaining professional contracts.

    If as it has been claimed by professional scouts who view our players, that TALENT ABOUNDS, what then is the reason for so many of our players being not able to "play the game" in a manner that would gain them quality professional contracts?

    A suggested answer is strengthen the quality of teaching (coaching) at all levels of our football. As Livi was wont to suggest, "...we have failed the youth"!!!!
