The most egregious things that have occurred at this world cup are 1) the tackle by Frenchman Matuidi on Nigerian Onazi, and 2) The American ref's issuance of only a yellow card for the offense.
It has been confirmed that Onazi has a broken tibia and fibula in his left leg; two fractures. Most commentators glossed over it. In fact, I heard some commentators, who had benefitted from watching several replays, remark hours later that it was the right call by the ref. Had the red card been given, the game would have been totally different.
The whole thing furthers my thoughts that pro-sports are more about entertainment and $$ than about fairness. Had a European's, American's, Argentine's, or Brazilian's leg been broken in such a fashion, there would have been a huge outcry.
Resigned Nigerian coach, Keshi, rightly pointed out that Onazi had been targeted throughout the game with many vicious tackles. Diego Maradona said, " It is impossible that the referee did not see this criminal tackle. It is worse than what Suarez did."
Had a foreign punished this as lightly, what would the comments of the media and the public have been?
