The played with great heart when one short. ...but not sensibly! They benefited from a Russian TEAM filled with 'dim-witted players'=equal never moved the ball around swiftly enough to take advantage of the extra man. ...even as Costa Rica kept making the first pass on the Russians' attack.

How can you say the Costa Rican were good at playing one down when they kept giving away possession...deliberately? Are you saying part of the strategy was depending on the Russians to play in a silly manner? ...thinking the Russians would be even sillier than 'we could ever be therefore let us give it to them as they would make better use of possession on our behalf than we could for selves'?
