  • World Cup 2014 - Prediction on Round of 16 Matches

    Introduction:
There can never be an attempt to make predictions on a succeeding round without reflection on the preceding set of matches. As has happened over the years I got some right and I got some wrong. The most astonishing wrong calls were to do with Spain’s exit from its group and the wonderful rise of CONCACAF TEAMs Mexico and Costa Rica.

There is - what I think is - an interesting take on Costa Rica’s performance. It could be argued that the team progressed from a “Group of Death”. The following was how I saw that group –
    Group D
    Uruguay

    Costa Rica

    England

    Italy

The three teams - Uruguay, England and Italy - in contention for advancing are each in with a realistic chance of so doing.

If I were certain of the fitness of Luis Suarez...one player (?)...I would be double sure of Uruguay's progress. If I could see in the mind of 'the mad' Roy Hudson I would perhaps be persuaded that England would also make it. For all the foregoing...the Italians will present the usual excellent defense and have potent strikers including the unpredictable...mercurial 23 year old Mario Barwuah Balotelli.

England to break my heart and fail to advance.

I have not seem much of Costa Rica recently. I saw one match during the flurry of recent 'International Friendlies' and they looked horrible. I select the Costa Ricans to be 4th in this group.

To win the group – Italy

To advance as runners-up – Uruguay
The reality of “performance on the day” or in Costa Rica’s case "performance during the tournament" trumping all else underlines her excellent play in the tough Group D.

Mexico’s reality is totally different. It is in the genes of its players to play TEAM but its collection of players struggled throughout the CONCACAF’s hexagonal rounds and in the preliminary rounds before. The players and the new coach seem to have finally got it right. Mexico is back to playing what she has most often done, playing as TEAM.

The others of my wrong calls I leave to the fans to think on.

    The matches:
28 June 2014: Brazil v Chile and Colombia v Uruguay

    Brazil v Chile
Both teams are blessed with attacking talent but Brazil has such talent in every area of the pitch. Both teams have problems defensively. However across the pitch Brazil has the greater potential for improved performances.

Chile could be said to be on top of its game. Brazil is underperforming.

Based on each team's Group play both teams appear evenly matched, however, based on personnel Brazil is a more balanced team and has shown match through succeeding match improvement. Expect Brazil to continue its improvement.

To win and advance – BRAZIL

    Colombia v Uruguay
This match-up is an intriguing on. There is Colombia with its exhilarating attacking flair which has always left room for a good counter-attacking team to exploit and there is Uruguay that has already given up 4 goals and has lost the prolific Luis Suarez because of his histrionics.

Following on the FIFA ruling on Luis Suarez incident, based on comments from Uruguay and from its camp, there is a feeling of being persecuted. That has startlingly been expressed by Uruguay’s FA president, Wilmar Valdez,
It’s feels like Uruguay has been thrown out of the World Cup.
The conventional wisdom suggests a Uruguay in disarray.

As an alternate to the conventional, it could be that the feeling of persecution brings the players together and brings out the best from the talented Uruguayans?

Will Colombia’s current high flying attacks prevail over a shambolic Uruguay?

The Uruguayans to come out fighting with Edinson Cavani free of playing second fiddle to Luis Suarez and to at last at this tournament fully express himself.

To win and advance – URUGUAY

29 June 2014: Netherlands v Mexico and Costa Rica v Greece

    Netherlands v Mexico
The Dutch waltzed through their group thumping Spain 5 - 1, and cruising to a 2 – 0 win over Chile…but the hard fought 3 – 2 win over the hard working Australians causes pause. Additionally in the match versus Chile, the last match for the Dutch, the previously excellent TEAM-man Arjen Robben's previously contained self-indulgent play raised its ugly head.

The Dutch needs all players focused on TEAM. Deviate from that focus and the chance of advancing gets tougher and tougher as opponents met are from here on becomes ten times more difficult to turnover.

Mexico is on an upward path. The struggling aggregation seen in the CONCACAF Hexagonal is no more. The players have been welded into a well synchronized unit. It is a one for all and all for one, unit.

This is a TEAM with strong players who presented good perpetual movement and good passing. The players were unrelenting runners with goal-scorers upfront, in the middle and has the aerial threat and set-piece finisher specialist, Rafael Máquez. The players showed a willingness to take good strikes on the opponents’ goal . The TEAM poses a threats from in the box and from distance.

I expect the Mexicans to overpower the Dutch.

To win and advance – MEXICO

    Costa Rica v Greece
Costa Rica is playing wonderful TEAM football. No egos on display. No player going for personal glory.

Greece also plays wonderful team. ..but looking at each team it appears to me that Costa Rica has made greater advances from Qualifying Rounds and through the matches of its Group. Costa Rica is on the more rapid rise.

Greece is Greece. Good team play - Solid defense - Methodical play - Good basic interplay on attack and defense. …but I expect her to find the going just a little too tough.

To win and advance – COSTA RICA

30 June 2014: France and Nigeria and Germany v Algeria

      France v Nigeria
The first question being asked is,
      Will we have this game?
The answer must be, Yes! …and that is in the context of headlines that scream,
Nigeria refused to train on Thursday following a disagreement over appearance fees, bonuses…
Before the escalation of the ‘money feud’ within Nigeria’s ranks, I had already written in Nigeria to advance. Their players showed great sense of purpose and fight. Since then the headlines tell us preparation for Argentina has been at best, disrupted and at worst, non-existent.

The level of competition rises each time a team advances. Nigeria shall face stiffer competition than met in the group stage. I do not see any team progressing without detailed preparation for each matches.

The distractions jolted Nigeria and focusing on the match must be difficult.

France shall continue with its 'gung-hoo' attacks and once again win even as she continues to display great defensive ‘holes’ and ‘so-so’ midfield stability.

      To win and advance FRANCE

      Germany v Algeria
Germany is my #1 TEAM in the World. Typical German TEAM: Well organized. Strong players save Mesut Ozil who is possibly the most creative player playing the game outside of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. A supporting cast which includes the best attacker/defender in Thomas Muller.

Thomas Muller is on par with Messi and Ronaldo on finishing. He is also as good a defender as one can have.

...then there is defender/midfielder extraordinaire, Philip Lamn. This is simply a team bursting with talent of top order in every position. A superbly balanced TEAM.

As a unit, great defensively and on attack. A passing/moving aggregation that has uncanny understanding among players. Included in the on-the-field X1 is the world’s top goalkeeper/sweeper.

      - Germany shall win the group. TEAM! TEAM! TEAM! That is the German forte! ...plus they are strong, fast, technical proficient and mentally strong.

Algeria has already had a wonderful World Cup 2014. This is the first time into the Round of 16.

The players and TEAM shall put up a good fight.

To win and advance – GERMANY

01 July 2014: Argentina v Switzerland and Belgium and USA

        Argentina v Switzerland
Possible the weakest of TEAMs in Switzerland face one of my pre-tournament favorites Argentina.

        SEE:
Switzerland is coming off a recent match against my currently horrible Reggae Boyz and did not impress. The Swiss appeared ponderous. The players also appeared to be lacking technically and tactically. In addition they were woeful in front of goal. Not a good TEAM.

The evidence Switzerland presented on manner of play during the group stage has not changed my opinion. No discernable improvement on play observed. The players work very, very hard.

Argentina also has hard workers. At this stage of the competition each team has players working very, very hard. Argentina has the added bonus of Messi.

        To win and advance ARGENTINA

        Belgium v USA
This match-up brings the USA’s industry and good organization against the equally industrious but less organized Belgium.

If both teams are at full strength there shall be a titanic struggle. The problem is each team could end up having an extremely influential player missing. The USA could be without midfielder and all-field rover, Jermaine Jones. Belgium could be without captain Vincent Kompany.

It is tempting to think that neither team can perform to anywhere near full potential without their respective highly rated player - USA's Jones and Belgium's Kompany.

The USA has been so well prepared that even if Jones is out a credible performance shall be forth-coming.

Belgium can better make adjustments without drastically down-grading performance. They are not yet TEAM and any change shall see good quality replacement player.

The unit quality of each TEAM is not as wide as some believe. It is USA’s TEAM-work versus Belgium’s individual creativity personified in Eden Hazard and young Divock Origi.

The teams make this is a difficult call. Belgium to improve on TEAM-play but that shall not be enough as the USA to dig in and continue to present better TEAM-play.

This should be another mighty step for TEAM USA and a boast for the game in the USA. A USA win would provide another feather in CONCACAF’s cap.

To and win and advance – USA

WCup 2014: Arjen Robben - Some facts

FORTALEZA, Brazil (AP) -- Arjen Robben just seems to get quicker and quicker. The 30-year-old Bayern Munich winger has out-sprinted every defender he has faced at the World Cup so far and is scoring goals, too.

Sorry to say...but truth it is...

Switzerland is definitely the worst TEAM to have advanced...and the manner of Argentina's play suggests we have here in this Round of 16 the only TEAM competing with the Swiss for title of totally horrible!!!
