  • In those long by-gone days when I was in 6th form we had

a subject named "GP"=General Paper. My teacher was Mervyn Morris, he who just became Jamaica's Poet Laureate. He also is and has been for sometime professor emeritus at the University of the West Indies, Mona.

He would at times open "The Gleaner" and have us review an article chosen by him. It was a fun time and his classes also 'excited' the mind. Mervyn was a great teacher. By now you will all have guessed that he had a lasting impact on my life. Funnily...or perhaps not his approach to teaching and the manner in which he conducted his classes fit right in with the guidance of my parents and the interest I took in the sciences, sports and my attempts at being a teacher.

Anyway...there is a report of the game against Switzerland that appeared in the Jamaica Observer written by Ian Burnett - Boyz give spirited display against World Cup-bound Switzerland

Gutsy Boyz leave Schaefer smiling after losing to Switzerland -
    - that appears in the online version of today's publication that I think Mervyn would have laid before us were it to have appeared in that time when we had those enjoyable "GP" classes. Mervyn would have asked us to read Ian's column - by the way I enjoy Ian's reporting - and asked for comments on firstly the headline, then the by-line immediately below the headline and then the reporting...after all that the next exercise would be paragraph following paragraph review then when completed we would then each be required to think on whether or not our initial impressions and conclusions had undergone any change.

I ask you to follow Mervyn's methods...and give your initial thought on how well our TEAM did and your last impressions?

    Raskep!!!
