Arminia Bielefeld beat Dynamo Dresden, 3-2 to earn a spot in the Bundesliga 2 relegation playoff against third-division Darmstadt. Dynamo Dresden sank to 17th place and will be automatically relegated. Darmstadt is coached by Dirk Schuster, who played under Winnie Schafer for six years.
At the top of the table, Cologne clinched the championship weeks ago, Paderborn remained in second place, and Greuther Furth was third. Greuther Furth plays Hamburg of Bundesliga 1. Hamburg is trying to avoid relegation for the first time in 50 years.
The controversial RB Leipzig club finished second in and will be automatically promoted. However, because RB Leipzig is operated by the Red Bull energy drink empire, they are not a "club" in the traditional sense and may not get a license from the German FA (DFB).
If RB Leipzig does not get a license for the second division, DFB is considering several options.
