The 22-year-old, who helped his country win the 2006 African Cup of Nations, was training with club side Ahly when he collapsed after 35 minutes.
"He did not clash with another player, he just fell to the ground," a club spokesman told BBC Sport.
Abdelwahab was rushed to hospital but died before arriving. A cause of death has yet to be established.
"It might be a heart attack but we are not sure yet," the team doctor said.
Abdelwahab had not played a match since the end of the Egyptian season in May because of a dispute over his registration.

The full-back had been on loan at Ahly for the last two years from Al Dafraa of the United Arab Emirates.
But negotiations over a permanent move back to Cairo had stalled, ruling him out of the start of the new season and Ahly's campaign in the group phase of the African Champions League, which started in July.
A dispute between the two clubs was due to be heard by Fifa next month.
Abdelwahab's inactivity had also seen him lose his place in the Egyptian national side, who are preparing for an African Nations Cup qualifier against Burundi in Cairo on Saturday.
