  • Anyone out there heard of CaptainU?

or had experience with this outfit?

They are trying to get my son to register and I am a little leery of what they can do and really if they're what they say they are. They are supposed to be a conduit between student athlete and Colleges (coaches) looking for recruits.

I'm just now starting to research them.

Where are they from? Peter, one thing that I have learned after being around this travel soccer/college business for the last 4 years is that it is a scam. The clubs and some academies talk a great game about "college" but in reality, it is only a very small number of scholarships to good schools available, and it is a rare talent that will get those kinds of call ups. I'm not saying that your youth isn't worthy, just to warn you to be careful.

Not sure where they're from. His club team is going to a tournament in Alabama on Monday (apr 7th) and it looks like somehow "CaptainU" got our emails and send us this (to Robyn's email as she's who gets the corresondence from the club), well it was the second one:

      Hi B. R.

I have you listed as one of the only athletes on SKHY FC that is competing at the Open Cup that is still missing a player profile.

Click here and create your profile now. The deadline to add your info to the player book is almost up! College coaches have already started searching through Open Cup athlete's profiles.

      Thanks,

      Anicia

If you already have a CaptainU profile set up, click here to link your profile to the event.

To register it looks like you have to pay something, I didn't go that far in the registration process... the website gives you no information about them. It's like you have to register first which I don't like.

Anyway, I'm not rushing to do anything with it. I will talk to his coaches on the weekend to find out what they know. It obviously came from the registration of the team going to Alabama (Decatur).

I'll let you know what I find out.

If you are looking a scholarship for your son, do it yourself. Make sure you have a player profile, with all the newspaper clipping you can get even from school paper, any video and list all he has done as well as his grades.

It is better if you call the schools or coaches or send them the info. I wouldn't go through any third party. Also it is better you talk to the schools and spend that money in the summer and doing a tryout at a few colleges in the summer.

it might not directly be a scam but i think that it is not likely to be able to deliver up to its promises.

          i agree with 'sass.

I'm not looking for a scholarship for my son. If that ever happens so be it... this outfit sent an email to my wife's account saying they want him to register with them... his club side is going to a tournament in Alabama and I suspect that's where they got my wife's (and the other team members' email).

So I thought I'd register him, but when I saw credit card etc etc I backed way off!

If he is to get noticed though, it will have to be through his club and/or his school, a small private school that doesn't have a team in the top tier of local football.

Currently, we are trying working to enter them in U16 in the local Secondary League in Sept. as there are five boys in the school in that age group who also play for his club, so we figure we have a core of players.

            We'll see.

Peter I would tell, don't wait on him to get notice. send out feelers to some school. you have some good schools looking for above average player and it sound like your son is in that group. Trust mi it can make your "packet" much heavier in a few years.

First thing you do is start a scrap book and try get some video tapes. It even sweeter if he has academic background. Nuff school looking for kids with good academic background as they may get academic scholarship and can save the soccer scholarship. Let him study and take the SAT and a good score and you might be good.
