Bayern Munich
Manuel Neuer
The cliché about being only a spectator could have been invented for Neuer last night, even when he was unable to stop Podolski’s fierce second-half finish. 5/10
Philipp Lahm
Bayern’s Mr Versatile could have provided more attacking support to Robben and was pushed aside by Podolski for Arsenal’s equalising goal. 6
Javi Martinez
Has played most of his career in central midfield but can be almost as influential out of defence with his passing. Had a first-half ‘goal’ ruled out for offside. 7
Dante
Will miss the first leg of the quarter-finals after a deserved booking for a cynical foul on Oxlade-Chamberlain. Was only rarely troubled otherwise. 6
David Alaba
Pinned Ozil back with his attacking running and was one of Bayern’s main threats. Created an excellent first-half chance for Robben and dragged one shot wide. 8
Thiago
Knitted the play together superbly for Bayern in central midfield. Rarely conceded possession and helped to ensure home dominance of the ball. 8
Bastian Schweinsteiger
Back in the team following recent injury and was instrumental in Bayern’s control of the game before capping his performance with an excellent goal. 7
Arjen Robben
Shot one excellent chance into the ground and had a further effort cleared off the line by Koscielny. Was then fortunate not to be booked for simulation. 6
Mario Gotze
Given the freedom to play as Bayern’s ‘number 10’ and, although he produced moments of real quality, does not yet provide the consistency of Muller or Kroos. 6
Franck Ribery
Like Schweinsteiger, Ribery is still recovering full match fitness but, in an otherwise quiet game, he did brilliantly created Bayern’s opening goal. 6
Mario Mandzukic
A potential transfer target of Arsenal this summer. Hesitant with a second-half chance but was especially effective with his pressing off the ball. 6
Arsenal
Lukasz Fabianski
Almost committed a big first-half mistake when he failed to collect an Alaba cross. Got down well to subsequently deny Robben, Gotze and Mandzukic before his penalty save from Muller. 6
Bacary Sagna
Risked conceding a penalty with an early challenge on Alaba and could not prevent Ribery creating Bayern’s first but defended admirably under persistent pressure. 6
Per Mertesacker
Organised Arsenal defensively and made some crucial interceptions, especially aerially, to help contain Bayern’s relentless threat to only one goal. 7
Laurent Koscielny
Another evening that highlighted the quality of his partnership with Mertesacker. Made a goalline clearance to deny Robben but then conceded a penalty to the Dutchman. 7
Thomas Vermaelen
Was targeted by Bayern and Robben early in the game but stood up to the challenge and it was down the right that Arsenal were ultimately most vulnerable. 7
Mikel Arteta
Was always going to spend most of the game chasing shadows and Bayern’s relentless pressing off the ball meant that he was unable to dictate the tempo. 5
Santi Cazorla
Asked to play in an unfamiliar central midfield role as Wenger reorganised his team and was helpless to prevent Arsenal being overrun in midfield. 5
Mesut Ozil
Moved out wide to the right and, with Arsenal starved of possession, had little influence. Substituted at half-time. 5
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
Arsenal’s outstanding player in the first half. Played without fear and lit up the Allianz Arena with one first-half run. 7
Lukas Podolski
Arsenal’s best finisher provided his usual limited defensive cover but then a moment of brilliance to equalise with a powerful near-post shot from an acute angle. 7
Olivier Giroud
Dropped for the first leg and struggled to exert any real influence last night. Arsenal would have benefited from a more mobile attacking option. 5
