WATFORD, England (CMC) - Reggae Boyz striker Marlon King scored his second goal in as many matches Sunday but afterward shrugged off suggestions his availability during the season could have saved Watford from relegation.
King, who scored a 52nd minute penalty to steal a share of the points against Newcastle in a 1-1 draw, spent most of the season sidelined after suffering a bad knee injury last October.
The 27-year-old returned in mid-April and fired in two goals in the last two matches of the season to finish with four goals in 12 appearances. It came much too late, however, as Watford finished bottom of the Premiership tables.
"I think it's really disrespectful to the boys who have put in 110 per cent all season to say that I could have made a difference, even though of course I would like think that I could have," King said.
"It's great to be playing again after a long spell out and of course to get on the score sheet on that last day of the season as well."
King, recently banned by the Jamaica Football Federation for disciplinary reasons, was the key figure being Watford's promotion to the Premiership last season with a league-leading 21 goals.
He started the Premiership season with a bang, getting goals in his first few matches before sustaining the injury against Arsenal in October.
King, who will once again ply his trade in the Championship, said he was looking forward to being fit for next season and helping the club back into the Premiership.
"I'm the worst watcher of the game, playing or not playing. It's hard for me [when I'm injured] but you have to get through it, stay positive and be patient. I tried to rally the fans, they've been magnificent all season," King explained.
"As for next year, I think the gaffer will be trying to keep the squad together. He'll have his targets and we won't get carried away. Of course we want to bounce straight back up but for now it's one step at a time.
"As long as we've got the same squad and the same mentality that we have had all season -we've never let out heads drop - then I think we'll be fine."
