I think we are too quick to make JLIJ look less than intelligent.

If you meant 'context' in the sense of what he was addressing...maybe (as you rightly stated or alluded to...a guess has to be made about what he meant)...but if you meant 'context' in terms of allowing listeners in our position (we were not at the game) to understand then it does not help. The question is again - a coach gave a 'thoughtful' comment. Right?

The coach never covered himself in 'glory'.
